The Vltava River at Prague’s Mánes exhibition hall turned blood-red on Monday afternoon, after activists from an art group calling themselves Bolt958 poured an unknown substance into the water. The group charged that the famous art gallery “was bleeding”. The protest was over how the space, in their view, is being misused.
An exhibition dedicated to the famous shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is now on display at Prague’s Kampa Museum. Entitled Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes, the exhibition explores the nearly 50-year-long career of the visionary designer. The iconic shoes, which many women know from films and TV series, such as the Sex and the City or Marie Antoinette, will be on display at the Kampa Museum until November 12.
Barrel organ players from around Europe descended on Prague this week for their annual gathering in celebration of the historical instrument and street music. The event called “The Barrel Organ Lives!” brought a unique atmosphere to Prague’s Lesser Town which provided a perfect backdrop for the open-air public concerts that took place here.
Brutal Assault is one of the best-known festivals of heavy or extreme music in the Czech Republic – from black metal to hardcore punk. Every year, it takes place within the grounds of an 18th century fortress known as Josefov at the town of Jaroměř, near the Polish border. In fact it is on right now, with some 20,000 people attending this week to see more than 100 bands. In the past, bands like Motörhead performed there.
Among the many outdoor events taking place in the Czech capital in the summer is the traditional get-together of designers who come to sell their goods at the Prague Design Market that takes place five times a year. Last weekend the event took place at the National Theatre piazzetta which now bears the name of the country’s late president Vaclav Havel.
Producer Rick McCallum is nothing less than a legend in the film business, known for his many years with Lucasfilm and his work on enormous projects like The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and the Star Wars prequels. After retiring from Lucasfilm several years ago, McCallum relocated to Prague where he founded Film United. In our interview he discusses Czech talent and the benefits of shooting in the Czech Republic, and tells the story of a chance meeting he had in the 1990s with President Václav Havel.
After nearly ten years of bringing the best of Czech live performance to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival the Czech Centre in London worked to create a wider program bringing a whole season of exhibitions and live art to two cities in Scotland. I spoke to the director of the Czech Centre in London Tereza Porybná about the events being staged within the Czech Season in Scotland.
Final preparations are underway for this year’s edition of the weeklong Prague Pride festival of LGBT culture, which starts on Monday. Over 100 events are planned for one the seventh edition of one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the region. This year the organisers of Prague Pride say they will place a special emphasis on the human rights of LGBT people in repressive Eastern states such as Chechnya and Armenia. Spokesperson Bohdana Rambousková told me more.
