Roland Garros finalist Marketa Vondroušová has withdrawn from the U.S.
Open with a wrist injury, tournament organisers said on Friday.
The 20-year-old Czech has been out of action since falling in the first round at Wimbledon.
Vondroušová fell just short of becoming the first Czech woman to win the French Open for 38 years when she lost to Australia’s Ash Barty in the Roland Garros final.
Tomáš Berdych made a successful return to the tennis courts on Sunday
after a layoff with injury. The Czech, who is 33, beat Italy’s Andreas
Seppi 6-1 3-6 6-3 in the first round of a competition in Winston-Salem in
the US for his first ATP win in almost six months. He entered the
competition as a wild card.
Berdych achieved his highest ranking, fourth in the world, in 2015. He has reached at least the semi-finals of all four Grand Slams but has never won one.
Kateřina Siniaková and Barbora Krejčíková won the women’s doubles
competition at the Rodgers Cup in Toronto. The Czech pair, who were top
seeds, beat Anna-Lena Grönefeld of Germany and Demi Schuurs of the
Netherlands 7-5 6-0 in Sunday’s final.
It was the third title that Krejčíková and Siniaková have lifted together after the French Open and Wimbledon last year.
Czech tennis player Marie Bouzková lost to American star Serena Williams
in the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Toronto on Saturday by a score
of 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.
Ahead of the match, Bouzková, a 21-year-old qualifier ranked 91st in the world, had gone six matches without dropping a set.
She said it was a dream come true to take on Williams, seeded 8th in the tournament.
Bouzková broke the American three times to take the first set in less than half an hour. But Williams rallied in the second set, slashing her unforced errors and won the last four games to force the decider.
Czech tennis player Marie Bouzková has reached the semi-finals of the WTA
tournament in Toronto following a win against Simona Halep of Romania, who
suffered from a heel injury.
The 21-year-old qualifier, ranked No 91, has gone six matches without dropping a set. Bouzková next faces the heavily favoured American star Serena Williams, the No. 10 seed, on Saturday.
Bouzková won the 2014 US Open girls’ singles title. She made her WTA debut the following year at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, where she lost in the first round. She made it to the second round of Wimbledon this year.
Her compatriot Karolína Plíšková, seeded No. 3, lost to Canadian Bianca Andreescu.
Czech tennis player Barbora Strýcová has been voted WTA Breakthrough of
the Month for July after enjoying the best Grand Slam of her career at the
age of 33. She beat four seeds on route to the semi-finals at Wimbledon,
the first time she had reached the last four at a major tournament.
In addition Strýcová and Hsieh Su-wei won the ladies doubles at the All England Club, a result that left the Czech veteran world doubles number one.
Former world number 1, Ivan Lendl, who coached Alexander Zverev to his only
major title at the ATP Tour Finals last November, has announced that their
cooperation is over, effective immediately.
One of the most successful partnerships in the annals of tennis ended on a sour note, with Zverev accusing Lendl of not devoting himself properly to the job and Lendl saying Zverev’s off-court issues prevented him from working in a way that was consistent with Lendl’s philosophy.
This year’s Wimbledon has been a successful tournament for Czech tennis in the doubles category. Barbora Strýcová won the women’s competition with her Taiwanese partner Hsieh Su-wei, a feat that simultaneously propelled her to world number one status. There is also hope of upcoming talent in the men’s category as a Czech duo won the junior doubles for the first time ever.
Barbora Strýcová of the Czech Republic and Hsieh Su-wei of Chinese Taipei
claimed the Wimbledon women's doubles title beating Gabriela Dabrowski
of Canada and Xu Yifan of China, 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and six minutes.
It is the first Grand Slam title in women’s doubles for Strýcová, who will rise to WTA Doubles World No.1 in the WTA doubles rankings for the first time in her career as a result.
