Petra Kvitová claimed her third title of the season at the J&T Banka
Prague Open on Saturday, as she rallied from a set down to defeat 7th seed
Mihaela Buzarnescu, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
The win is Kvitová's third title of the season following victories at the St. Petersburg Ladies' Trophy and the Qatar Total Open and the twenty-third title in her career.
Kvitová said after the game that it had been a tough fight but she was delighted to have won on home ground.
Sixth seed Karolína Plíšková is pulling out of the WTA tournament in
Prague. Plíšková, the Czech teams top ranked player ‚ made the
announcement on Moday citing health problems. She has reportedly suffered
from groin pain since Stuttgart.
Plíšková, who was slated to play against her sister Kristýna in the Prague tournament said she was very disappointed to have to pull out but would focus on getting in shape for Madrid.
Karolína Plíšková won her first title of the year when she beat
American CoCo Vanderweghe in the final of the Stuttgart Open on Sunday. She
won in straight sets 7:6, 6:4.
The win takes Plíšková’s overall tally of tournament titles to 10.
It’s Plíšková’s first win on clay since 2015 when she won the Prague tournament. Plíšková’ is seeded one when she takes part in the Prague Open next week.
The Czech Republic’s men’s tennis team have reached the playoffs for
the elite World Group in the Davis Cup. The Czechs made it 3:1 against
Israel with a doubles win in Ostrava on Saturday for an unassailable lead
on games in the best of five series.
The draw for the playoffs takes place next Wednesday. The Czech Republic won the Davis Cup in 2012 and 2013.
