In tennis, Czech player Lucie Šafářová has been dethroned from her top
spot as the world’s best doubles player.
In the latest WTA ratings, Šafářová has been replaced at the top spot by Swiss player Martina Hingis. The Czech player has dropped to third place.
Injuries over the last weeks have cost Šafářová points which could have helped her retain the position she won six weeks ago.
In the singles rankings, Petra Kvitová has dropped four places and is now 18th in the rankings. Karolína Plíšková is forth.
Team Europe has won the first-ever Laver Cup, held in the Czech capital,
although Team World came close to forcing an extra deciding game. In a
tense match Roger Federer defeated Nick Kyrgios in a super tiebreak 11-9.
Team Europe won with an overall 15 points to 9. Thirteen points were needed
under the tournament rules.
Earlier, Team World, trailing after the first two days of the Laver Cup in Prague, rebounded on Sunday with a win in the doubles over Tomáš Berdych and Marin Cilic and a win against World No. 1 Rafael Nadal. Zverev downed Team World's Querrey.
That put the score at 12:9 in favor of Team Europe, with the tournament founder Roger Federer facing Nick Kyrgios.
A win by Team World would have left the teams tied at 12 points apiece and would have forced a final fifth match to determine who would clinch overall victory.
The Laver Cup, in its first year, featured excellent tennis and very close matches, surpassing even the participants' expectations. Despite suffering three losses by razor-thin margins, Czech player Tomáš Berdych said he had been glad to be part of the team and happy that the competition had taken place in Prague in its inaugural year.
Team Europe won the first two matches of the Laver Cup which kicked off in
Prague on Friday, securing two out of a total of 13 points. The tournament,
in its first year, takes place over three days. In the opening match, Marin
Cilic edged Frances Tiafoe 7-6, 7-6.
Later, Dominic Thiem defeated John Isner in a super tiebreak: the score was 6:7, 7:6, 1:0.
The third match scheduled for Friday will see Team Europe's Zverev take on Team World's Shapovalov
In tennis, Czech player Barbora Strýcová has lost in the quarter finals
of the Pan Pacific Open being played in Tokyo, Japan.
Strýcová lost 7:5, 3:6, 1:6 against Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenko.
Earlier, the 31 year old Czech had created a surprise by knocking out fourth seed, British player Jo Konta.
The most successful tennis player in professional tennis and winner of a record 19 grand slams Roger Federer is in Prague, with the days counting down ahead of the first-ever Laver Cup. The tournament will pit Team Europe and Team World against each other, captained by tennis legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe. Understandably, neither side wants to lose.
Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer arrived in Prague on Monday ahead of the
premiere edition of the Laver Cup, which will pit two teams - from Europe
and the rest of the world – against each other on an indoor hard court.
Team Europe and Team World is being captained by former tennis rivals Bjorn Bjorg and John McEnroe.
Federer, the winner of 19 grand slams, told the media that he loved the Czech capital and was looking forward to the tournament which begins Friday.
The Czech men’s tennis team have been knocked out of the World Group in
the Davis Cup. It is only the second time the Czech Republic have exited
the top level of the competition and comes after a 2:3 defeat to the
Netherlands at the weekend.
The Czechs – without big names Tomáše Berdych and Radek Štěpánek – had been leading 2:1 on matches going into Sunday, but Jiří Veselý lost to Robin Haas before Lukáš Rosol was beaten by Thiemo de Bakker in the decisive fifth match.
Czech tennis player Lucie Šafářová has been knocked out in the
semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Quebec. She missed out on what would
have been her first final of the season after losing 6-7 4-6 to Timea Babos
of Hungary in Saturday’s encounter.
Šafářová, who is 30, lifted the title in Quebec in 2013 and was seeded first in this year’s tournament.
