Top men’s tennis player Tomaš Berdych remains at 14th place on the ATP rankings in spite of playing in his first singles final of the year over the weekend at Lyon, France. Berdych lost in straight sets to local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6:7, 5:7, in the final of what is regarded as a warm up for the French Open.
Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová could make her long-awaited return to tennis at the French Open in May, her spokesman Karel Tejkal told the Czech News Agency, adding that the decision will be made at the very last moment. The two-time Wimbledon champion has been out of action since December 2016 after she was hurt during an attack at her apartment in the Moravian town of Prostějov sustaining injuries to her left, playing hand. According to Tejkal, she is definitely ready to appear in Wimbledon in July.
The Czech Republic tied against the US on the first day of the Fed Cup semifinals in Florida. Seventeen- year-old Marketa Vondroušova lost to Coco Vandewegh 1:6, 4:6, but Katerina Siniaková evened the score with a 6:3, 6:3 win over Shelby Rogers. The top-ranked and three-time defending champions Czech Republic are defending the title without their best players. Petra Kvitová, Karolína Plíšková, Barbora Strýcová and Lucie Šafářová are absent for health reasons or a demanding program.

The Czech team to face the United States in the semi-final of the Fed Cup will be without some of its strongest players, non-playing captain Petr Pála announced on Wednesday. Top women’s player Karolína Plisková, the world number three, Barbora Strýcová. and Lucie Šafarová will all be absent for a range of health reasons and other commitments, the captain said. The tie is due to take place on 22 and 23 April in Florida. The Czech Republic has won the Fed Cup five times in the last six years.
In tennis, Czech second seed Karolína Plíšková failed to reach the finals of the Miami Open tournament after she was defeated by former world number one Caroline Wozniacki 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. In men’s singles quarter-finals, Tomáš Berdych lost to Roger Federer 6-2 3-6 7-6. Berdych served for the match at 6-4 in the tiebreak, but Federer reeled off four points in a row, winning when Berdych double-faulted.
