18 time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer who is in Prague after a ten year break on Monday greeted fans on Old Town Square, accompanied by Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych. The tennis star is here to promote the Laver Cup which is to take place in Prague in September. Federer will return to Prague for the event which will be held at Prague’s O2 Arena on September 22 to 24.

The Czech Republic have beaten Spain in the first round of tennis’s Fed Cup in Ostrava. The Czechs achieved an unassailable 3:1 lead in the best of five tie when Barbora Strýcová, who had lost the opening rubber, beat Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 6-4 on Sunday. The Czechs have dominated the Fed Cup in recent years and lifted the title in November for the third time in a row and the fifth time in six years.
The Czech Republic are tied 1:1 with Spain in the first round of tennis’s Fed Cup in Ostrava. Barbora Strýcová was beaten 0-6 6-3 1-6 by Garbine Muguruza in the opening singles rubber in Ostrava on Saturday afternoon. However, world number three Karolína Plíšková drew the hosts level after beating Lara Arruabarrena 6-4 7-5. In tennis, the Czech team finally lost in the Davis Cup to Australia 1:4. Jiří Vesely picked up the sole point for the visitors with a 3:6, 7:5, 6:3 win against doubles specialist Sam Groth. In the last match Jan Šátral lost 6:7, 2:6 against Jordan Thompson. The tie had already been decided after the doubles when the Czechs went 3:0 down. They will now face play-offs against other first round losers to remain in the top 16 World Group.

In the doubles, Jiří Vesely and Jan Šátral lost in straight sets to the Australian pairing of Sam Groth and John Peers 3:6, 2:6, and 2:6. The Czechs had already lost their opening singles ties. The Czech team will now face play-offs to remain in the top 16 group of countries in the World Group. The weakened Czech team was without Tomáš Berdych and Lukáš Rosol.
