The Czech tennis stars Karolína Plíšková and Petra Kvitová have “swopped” coaches. Plíšková, the world number six, has just announced that she is to begin working with David Kotyza, who until January trained Kvitová. The latter, meanwhile, has hired Jiří Vaněk, who Plíšková parted company with in mid-November. World number 11 Kvitová is a two-time Wimbledon winner. Plíšková reached the final of the US Open this year.
Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych will finish this year back in the Top 10 (in tenth spot) in the ATP rankings; it is the seventh time in a row he will end the season among the top players. Earlier, Berdych briefly fell outside the Top 10 and also failed to qualify for this year’s ATP World Tour Finals tournament which was won by Andy Murray of Great Britain.
Czech number one women’s tennis player, Karolína Plíšková, has announced that she has split with her coach, Jiří Vaněk, who has trained her since 2014. Under his leadership Plíšková won five tournaments, advanced to the US Open finals and reached the fifth spot in the WTA rankings. Plíšková said she would start looking for a replacement coach after the holidays.
This year's Fed Cup final in Strasbourg between France and the Czech
Republic was decided in the doubles match on Sunday night. The duo of
Barbora Strýcová and Karolína Plíšková defeated Caroline Garcia and
Kristina Mladenovic in a tense two-setter: the final score was 7:5, 7:5.
The Czech women's tennis team has now won three Fed Cup championships
in a row and five in the last six years.
Earlier on Sunday in the second singles match of the day, Strýcová stepped in for an injured Petra Kvitová against France's Alizé Cornet. The Czech squad at that point was trailing 2-1 on points and needed the win to avoid going out. Strýcová downed her opponent 6:2,7:6 to force the decider.
Czech tennis player Karolína Plíšková fought hard in one of the longest-ever matches in the final of the Fed Cup, edging Kristina Mladenovic by a score of 6:3, 4:6; 16:14 to give the Czech Republic a 1:0 lead on the first day of the final against France. The Czech Republic are the defending champions and looking to win the championship for the third time in a row and for the fifth time in six years.
