This year's Fed Cup final in Strasbourg between France and the Czech
Republic was decided in the doubles match on Sunday night. The duo of
Barbora Strýcová and Karolína Plíšková defeated Caroline Garcia and
Kristina Mladenovic in a tense two-setter: the final score was 7:5, 7:5.
The Czech women's tennis team has now won three Fed Cup championships
in a row and five in the last six years.
Earlier on Sunday in the second singles match of the day, Strýcová stepped in for an injured Petra Kvitová against France's Alizé Cornet. The Czech squad at that point was trailing 2-1 on points and needed the win to avoid going out. Strýcová downed her opponent 6:2,7:6 to force the decider.
Czech tennis player Karolína Plíšková fought hard in one of the longest-ever matches in the final of the Fed Cup, edging Kristina Mladenovic by a score of 6:3, 4:6; 16:14 to give the Czech Republic a 1:0 lead on the first day of the final against France. The Czech Republic are the defending champions and looking to win the championship for the third time in a row and for the fifth time in six years.

Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych was knocked out of the Paris Masters on Friday night after losing to Andy Murray in the quarter-finals 7-6, 7-5. The defeat puts Berdych out of contention for the eighth and final place in the ATP World Tour Finals that start in London on Monday week. It is the first time the Czech failed to reach the prestigious tournament since 2010. Meanwhile, Andy Murray has a chance to replace Djokovic as world No1 if wins his semi-final on Saturday against Milos Raonic.
Top Czech men’s tennis player Tomáš Berdych faces Frenchman Gilles Simon for a place in the Paris Masters quarterfinals and a chance to keep his hopes alive of a place in the end of season ATP Masters tournament. Berdych this week dropped out of the world top 10 for the first time in more than six years following recent injury and poor form. He has played Simon, who once climbed to number six in the world, 12 times and lost seven of the confrontations.
