In tennis, the Czech Republic beat Germany 3:2 in the Davis Cup. The decisive fifth match was won by Lukáš Rosol who beat Alexander Zverev 6:2, 6:3,6:1 Earlier Czech number one Tomáš Berdych retired with a muscle injury with the match being won by Philipp Kohlschreiber 6:3, 7:5. The Czech Republic will face France in the next round.

He went down 6:3, 3:6, 4:6, 6:2, 3:6 against Germany’s number one Philipp Kohlschreiber. In Friday’s second singles, Tomáš Berdych will face the 18-year old debutant Alexander Zverev. On Saturday, Radek Štěpánek and Jiří Veselý will face Dustin Brown and Philipp Petzschner in the doubles.
Czech women tennis players have slipped in the WTA rankings published Monday. Top singles player Petra Kvítová has dropped from 8th to 9th place follower her quarterfinal exit at the Doha tournament last week. Lucie Šafářová and Karolína Plíšková have both dropped one place to 13th and 20th places respectively. In the mens’ ranking, Tomáš Berdych remains at number seven.
In tennis, Czech number one player Tomáš Berdych lost in the quarter finals of the Dubai Open. He went down 6:4, 6:4 against Australian Nick Kyrgios. Berdych lost his serve at the start of the encounter and was on the defensive against his more aggressive opponent for most of the match. He was also defeated by Kyrgios in the semi-finals of the Marseille event on Saturday.
Top Czech tennis player Petra Kvitová has moved up to 8th place on the women’s WTA rankings. The one place advance is largely thanks to the fall in form of Spanish player Carla Suarez Navarro. Lucie Safářová ,who has not played so far this year due to injury, is still ranked 10th. Top Czech men’s player Tomáš Berdych also remains unchanged at 8th place in the ATP singles table. Serena Williams has now overtaken Czech born Martina Navrátilová for the number of weeks she stayed as the top ranked player.
In tennis, the Czech Republic won a tight tie against Romania on Sunday 3:2 and are through to the semi-finals of the Fed Cup. Karolína Plíšková and Barbora Strýcová beat Andreea Mitu and Loana Olaru in the decisive doubles 6:2, 6:3. Earlier, Karolína Plíšková drew the tie level at 2:2 with a 6:4, 4:6, 6:3 win against Monica Niculescu. Petra Kvitová had earlier lost 4:6. 6:3, 3:6 against Romanian top player Simona Halep.
