The Czech Republic has been given a wild card entry to become the eighth team to take part in the World Team Cup in Dusseldorf from May 18-24. The Czech Republic will be represented by Tomáš Berdych and Jiří Vaněk and will be joined by the United States, Spain, Russia, Argentina, Germany, Italy and Sweden who qualified automatically under ATP rules. The 2007 event was won by Argentina, who beat the Czech Republic in the final.
Czech tennis player Iveta Benešová has reached the Estoril Open final after beating Maret Ani of Estonia 6-2, 6-1. The 132nd ranked player has reached her third straight final with the victory. Benešová will meet Maria Kirilenko of Russia, who advanced to the finals after defeating Czech Republic’s Klára Zakopalová.
Russian duo Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev battled from a set down to beat Czech pair Radek Štěpánek and Pavel Vízner to lift their side 2 -1 ahead in the Davis Cup quarter-final in Moscow on Saturday. The hosts won 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in two hours 58 minutes to make it 2-1 in favour of Russia. On Friday, Marat Safin of Russia battled from two sets down to put his squad into the lead with a win over Tomáš Berdych of the Czech Republic. In the second singles’ clash Štěpánek experienced few troubles beating Andreev in straight sets to level the scores at 1-1. Reverse singles will complete the tie’s schedule on Sunday.
Russia’s Marat Safin overcame a two-set deficit Friday to give his
country a 1-0 lead over the Czech Republic in the Davis Cup tennis
quarterfinals. Safin rallied to defeat Berdych 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
Later on Friday Radek Štepánek defeated Igor Andreev later in the 2nd singles match of the best-of-five series to level the series 1-1. He beat his opponent in straight sets 6:3, 6:2, 6:4 .
