The Czech ice hockey player Robert Lang will be out of action indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a severed Achilles tendon. Lang suffered the injury when he absorbed a hard check along the boards in a game between Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins. Lang, who is 38, has played in the NHL for 15 years and is Canadiens’ top scorer this season.

The ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr is in the Czech Republic’s squad for the Swedish Games, part of the four-nation Euro Hockey Tour. Czech coach Vladimír Růžička said Jágr’s availability was excellent news as it gave his team a greater chance of winning their first event on the tour this season. The Omsk forward’s first international tournament since 2006 is also good news for Czech hockey officials, who can expect a considerably bigger gate for a game against Finland at Prague’s O2 Arena next Thursday.

Robert Holík has broken Jaromír Jágr’s Czech record for the number of games played in ice hockey’s NHL. New Jersey’s centre, who is 38, played his 1274th game on Friday, a 4:0 defeat to Atlanta. Jágr had played one fewer game before leaving the NHL for Omsk in the Russian league. Holík could have set a new Czech record some time ago, except for breaking a finger in October, an injury which meant he missed 18 games.

In National Hockey League action, Czech forward Michal Frolík scored the final goal for Florida on Saturday in the Panther’s 6:1 romp over Pittsburgh. The forward scored in the 45th minute, his 7th goal of the season. Czech goalie Tomáš Vokoun was not in net for Florida in the win; goaltending duties in the match were instead covered by Craig Anderson.
The Czech Republic has suffered defeat at the hands of Russia in the quarterfinals at the world junior hockey championship in Ottawa, Canada. The Czechs were beaten on Friday by a score of 5:1. The game was tied a goal apiece after two periods, but the Russians exploded in the final period for four goals. It is the fourth year in a row that the Czech juniors will finish outside of the medals. Russia now faces Canada, while Sweden will face Slovakia in the semi-final round.
