The final of the playoffs of Czech ice hockey’s Extraliga between Zlín and Plzeň gets underway on Tuesday evening. Zlín have only won one Extraliga title in their history, while Plzeň have never taken the trophy. There is no love lost between the two clubs’ fans, in part due to an incident in 2005 when the then Zlín goalkeeper prevented Plzeň from scoring by moving the goal. The best-of-seven series is scheduled to end on April 21, if not sooner.
Zlín defeated Třinec 4:3 in the best-of-seven semifinal series of the Czech hockey league playoffs on Thursday night to book a place in the final. Zlín scored the first goal of the game very early, and added another goal five minutes into the second period. The hosts Třinec equalized just two minutes later but Zlín scored their second goal just before the second intermission. The visitors then added two more goals with some ten minutes to go and Třinec were only able to narrow the gap but failed to take the game into overtime. Zlín, who advanced to the finals after eight years, will face Plzeň for the league title.
In the NHL, Czech forward Martin Erat has been traded from the Nashville Predators to the Washington Capitals. The 31-year-old Erat, spent 11 seasons in Nashville and has never played for another NHL club. He signed a seven-year contract with the club five years ago but on Wednesday, he said it was time for a change, and was happy to have a chance to win the Stanley Cup.
Czech hockey club Plzeň defeated Slavia Prague 4:2 in game 6 of the playoffs’ semifinal series on Wednesday night to reach the final for the first time in 21 years. Playing on home ice, Plzeň soon went ahead but Slavia equalized before the end of the first period. The tie continued in the second period when both team scored a goal but in the final 20 minutes, Plzeň prevailed and scored twice to win the match and the best-of-seven series. Plzeň will face either Zlín or Třinec in the final.
Star forward Jaromír Jágr has joined the Boston Bruins from the Dallas Stars. Jágr, who is 41, is the 10th leading goal scorer in the history of the NHL and is perhaps the greatest Czech hockey player of all time. He is regarded as having a genuine chance of winning the Stanley Cup with Boston, which is also home to Czech centre David Krejčí. The Bruins are Jágr’s sixth NHL club.
Czech ice hockey legend Jaromír Jágr caused a minor sensation on Tuesday by switching clubs in the NHL shortly before the league’s transfer deadline. After an impressive season with Dallas, the veteran star has moved to Boston, putting himself in with a chance of winning the Stanley Cup one more time.
Regular season winners Slavia Prague beat Plzeň 3:2 in the fourth game of the best-of-seven semifinal series of the Czech hockey league playoffs on Friday night, and tied the series 2:2. The fifth game is scheduled on Monday. In the other semifinal series which continues on Saturday, Zlín is tied 1:1 with Třinec.
