The veteran Czech ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr notched up one assist for the Boston Bruins in their 2:0 win over Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night, a result which puts the Bruins 2:1 ahead on games in the NHL playoffs final. Jágr, who has himself failed to score so far in the final, made an excellent pass to Patrice Bergeron for his side’s second goal. Jágr, who is 41, last won the Stanley Cup over two decades ago.
In Sports News this Monday: cyclist Roman Kreuziger finishes third in the Tour de Suisse; the Boston Bruins, with Jaromír Jágr, even their series against Chicago in the Stanley Cup final; the Czech women’s basketball team declasses Lithuania to qualify for the knock-out stages at the European Championships; and football legend Josef Masopust returns to site of a Czechoslovak win over Brazil 57 years ago.
The Stanley Cup finals begin later on Wednesday, pitting the Boston Bruins (with Czech players David Krejčí and future hall-of-famer Jaromír Jágr) against the Chicago Blackhawks. The first two games take place in the Windy City. The Chicago Blackhawks have Michael Frolík and Michal Rozsíval on their roster, so regardless of which team wins, the feted cup, as is custom, will travel to the Czech Republic later this year. Members of the winning team are each ‘unofficially’ allowed to borrow the trophy for a day.
The Boston Bruins, featuring Czech players Jaromír Jágr and David Krejčí, have reached the final of the NHL’s Stanley Cup. The Bruins’ 1:0 victory on Friday over the Pittsburgh Penguins – whose goaltender was another Czech, Tomáš Vokoun – gave them an unassailable 4:0 lead on games. Jágr, who joined the Bruins in April, last won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh in 1992.
The Boston Bruins, with players David Krejčí and Jaromír Jágr, are a win away from making the Stanley Cup finals after defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 2:1 on Wednesday to take a commanding 3:0 series lead. The winning goal was scored by Patrice Bergeron in 2nd overtime on a play begun by Jágr against the boards. The 41-year-old Czech legend dug the puck out from Malkin, passing to Marchand who set up Bergeron for the winner. Goalie Tomáš Vokoun, who stopped 38 shots on the night, had little chance. In the playoffs, the Bruins’ Jágr, who has two Stanley Cup rings from more than two decades ago, has been effective at key moments; his teammate, David Krejčí, leads the postseason on points. So far he has scored nine goals and racked up 12 assists.
The Czech goaltender Tomáš Vokoun was benched in an NHL game for Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday that ended in a 6:1 defeat to Boston Bruins. One of the Bruins goal scorers on Monday was another Czech, forward David Krejčí, who helped the club open up a 2:0 lead on games in the Eastern Conference final.
The Pittsburgh Penguins, with goalie Tomáš Vokoun, have advanced to the next round of the NHL playoffs. They did so by defeating the Ottawa Senators on Friday by a score of 6:2. Ottawa managed to clinch only one win the best-of-seven series. Vokoun has been very solid in Pittsburgh’s run; on Friday he stopped 29 shots. The Pens will face the winner of the Bruins-Rangers series next; Boston has a stranglehold in that series, leading 3:1.
