In the NHL, Czech forward Jiří Hudler helped the Detroit Red Wings mount
a comeback against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, scoring twice in
third period and earning one assist to bring the Wings within one.
Colorado, however, were able to hold on and take the match 4:3. Hudler was
named the game’s third star.
In other action, Czech goalie Michal Neuwirth won his second-straight game, stopping 28 shots by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Washington won 4:2 at Toronto.
Twenty-three year-old Czech goalie Michal Neuvirth stopped 30 shots in the Washington Capitals’ Friday night win over Montreal – putting the brakes on a largely miserable February run. Prior to Friday’s game the Caps had lost eight of 11 matches. The goalie allowed only one goal and was named the game’s first star. The final score was 4:1. The Washington Capitals are in ninth spot in the Eastern Division and have to improve if they want to qualify for this year’s Stanley Cup playoffs.
In NHL action on Sunday, goalie Ondřej Pavelec stopped 31 shots by the Colorado Avalanche to help the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-1 win. Pavelec was named the game’s second star. Winnipeg is now tied at 64 points with the Toronto Maple Leafs (in eighth spot in the Eastern Conference); the eighth spot is the conference cut-off for the playoffs in May. In other hockey action, Patrik Eliáš and Petr Sýkora both earned assists in New Jersey’s 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
In the National Hockey League, the Detroit Red Wings have tied an NHL record for longest winning streak on home ice, notching up their 20th straight win at the Joe Louis Arena on Sunday when the club downed the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3. The win means the team has not lost at home in more than three months. Philadelphia’s Jaromír Jágr, who turns 40 on Wednesday, was unable to get onto the scoreboard in the game.
In Tuesday NHL game against the Florida Panthers, the Washington Capitals goalkeeper Tomáš Vokoun made 42 saves to get his fourth shutout of the season. The Czech goalie’s team won 4:0 and secured the top position in the league’s Southeast division. The Czech goalkeeper was recognized as the first star of the game.
Centre-forward Martin Hanzal scored twice and fellow player Radim Vrbata earned an assist in NHL action on Monday to help the Phoenix Coyotes defeat the Detroit Red Wings on Monday. The Coyotes are second-to-last in their division in the National Hockey League and 19th out of 30 teams; by contrast the Red Wings are at the top of the standings. Hanzal’s first goal came in the 27th minute and his second late in the game – an empty-netter – as Detroit pulled their goalie for the extra skater. Phoenix had lost to Detroit in their last seven outings.
