The Czech national team suffered a staggering defeat by the host, and title defender Canada 1:8 on Friday in their first game at the Under-20 Ice Hockey World Championship. The Czechs couldn’t keep up with the home team and only managed to score two minutes before the end of the match with Canada eight goals ahead. The Czech team will next face the United States on Monday.

Pittsburgh forward Petr Sýkora notched up his first NHL career hat-trick
on Thursday in the Penguins’ 9:2 romp over the New York Islanders.
Dupuis also had a hat-trick on the night. Sýkora has come close to
hat-tricks before, scoring twice on 38 different occasions - but the key
third goal had eluded him until now.
In other action, Columbus forward Jakub Voráček scored the decider in penalties against Nashville, the final score 2:1. And, Zbyněk Michálek scored the opening goal of the night for Phoenix against Minnesota. Phoenix went on to win 3:1.
Czech scorers left their mark in NHL action on Thursday, racking up a number of goals in league games. Phoenix’s young center forward Martin Hanzal earned his first hat-trick to lead the Coyotes to a 6:3 win over Toronto, while David Krejčí scored the winner for Boston 3:1 over Tampa Bay. Other Czechs who scored on the night included Patrick Eliáš and Petr Sýkora in their respective games.
Czech centre Jiří Hudler scored a winning goal for the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in their 5:2 win over Calgary. This was his fourth score in the last three games. Colorado’s Milan Hejduk opened the score in a game against Los Angeles, and he scored another goal at the shoot-out which secured the Avalanche’s victory of 4:3. In the Continental Hockey League, Jakub Klepiš scored all three goals for Russia’s Osmk in a win over Voskresensk.
In Sports News this Monday: Olympic champion and javelin world record holder Barbora Špotáková is, entirely predictably, named Czech Athlete of the Year; Slavia Prague get off to a losing start in the UEFA Cup group stage – Aston Villa’s Gareth Barry tells us it was a game of two halves; and the Czech Republic’s ice hockey players finish second in Finland’s Karjala Cup.
The Czech ice hockey team were beaten 1:0 on penalties by Russia in their final game at the Karjala Cup in Helsinki on Sunday. Victory would have given the Czechs their first triumph in the opening event of the Euro Hockey Tour for the first time since 2002. In their previous two games they lost to the hosts Finland and beat Sweden.
