Tampa Bay forward Vaclav Prospal was named the first star in a game
between the Sharks and the Washington Capitals in NHL ice hockey action on
Saturday. Prospal scored one goal and notched up two assists in his
team’s 5:2 win.
In other action, Martin Erat lifted Nashville over Columbus by scoring the final penalty in a 4:3 shoot-out.
Atlanta netminder Ondrej Pavelec humbled compatriot Tomas Vokoun of the Florida Panthers in a battle of Czech goalies on Friday night. In his third straight start, Pavelec stopped 36 shots by the Panthers and was declared the game’s first star. The Thrashers won 4:1. In other NHL action, Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek returned after a two week injury to lead the Red Wings 4:1 over Columbus. Detroit is currently atop the NHL standings.
Ice hockey goalie Milan Hnilicka - a former NHL player employed at Liberec - is bound for Russia. Hnilicka is leaving the Bili Tigri (White Tigers) for Russian team Ufa. The announcement was made on the team's website on Friday. At 34, Hnilicka is an experienced goaltender who won the World Championship three times. He was also 2nd backup keeper to Dominik Hasek on the national team which won the Nagano Olympics in 1998.
In Sports News: Slavia Prague go six points clear at the top of the Czech football league with a win over Teplice, though they lose captain Stanislav Vlcek ahead of a Champions League clash with Arsenal; Sparta are now second in the league after a 5:0 demolition of Most; Slavia Prague are also at the top of the Czech ice hockey league, after a win over Liberec; and Czech motorcyclist Lukas Pesek reflects on a "wild" season in which he finished fourth in the 125cc championship.
In NHL ice hockey action on Thursday defenseman Michal Rozsival helped his
team the New York Rangers by scoring the second goal in the Rangers' 2:0
win over Washington.
In other games: seasoned forward Martin Rucinsky notched up his first goal of the season for St Louis over Minnesota, as did Martin Erat for Nashville. Nashville won 3:0 over Vancouver.
The Atlanta Thrashers won their first win of the season in the National
Hockey League on Thursday, defeating the New York Rangers 5:3. Assists by
New York players Jaromir Jagr and Michal Rozsival weren't enough to keep
the Rangers in the match.
In other ice hockey action, the Maple Leaf's Pavel Kubina and Tomas Kaberle assisted on their team's winning goal against Florida; in the match the Leafs downed the Panthers by a score of 3:2.
After a weaker start, Czech ice hockey goalie Tomas Vokoun helped his team the Florida Panthers to their first victory in the new NHL season. Vokoun stopped all 29 shots by the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, earning the 22nd shutout of his career. Czech Rostislav Olesz scored the game's opening goal, assisted by compatriot Radek Dvorak. The Panthers ended up winning the game 3:0.
Tomas Plekanec scored his first goal for the Montreal Canadiens in NHL ice hockey action on Wednesday, helping lift his team 3:2 over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The player, a 20 goal-scorer last season, scored a game-tying goal in a game that was the NHL debut of the Canadiens' rookie goaltender Carey Price. The game-winner was then scored by Russian team mate Andrei Markov. The Canadiens have now won two and lost once in overtime in the first three match-ups of the season.
