Slavia Prague are preparing to play their first Champions League game in 12
years, away against Inter Milan, on Tuesday night. Slavia have a tough
group that also features Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund and their manager,
Jindřich Trpišovský, says the club’s aim will be to still be in
European competition after Christmas.
To achieve that the Czech title-holders would need to come at least third in the group, a result that would give them a place in the knock-out stages of the second-tier Europa League.
This is only the second time Slavia have reached the Champions League.
The Czech Republic beat Montenegro 3:0 in a Euro 2020 qualifying game in
Podgorica on Tuesday evening. The Czechs’ goals all came in the second
half, through Tomáš Souček, Lukáš Masopust and Vladimír Darida, who
converted a penalty in time added on. The reverse tie in Olomouc in June
ended in the same result.
Tuesday’s result leaves the Czech Republic second in their group behind leaders England with five of their eight qualifiers played. The Czechs’ next Group A game is against England in Prague next month.
The Czech soccer team lost Saturday’s qualifier against Kosovo 2:1,
complicating its chances of advancing to the 2020 Euro Championship.
The Czechs were the first to score with Patrik Schik hitting the net in the 15th minute, but Kosovo quickly turned the game around as Vedat Muriqi levelled and Mergim Vojvoda scored the winning goal in the second half.
Kosovo is now top of Group A with 8 points, while the Czech Republic is second with six points. It next faces Montenegro on Tuesday.
Czech international football forward Patrik Schick has left the Italian
club Roma for RB Leipzig in Germany’s Bundesliga. It is a one-year loan
deal with an option for Leipzig to make the move permanent.
Schick moved to Roma from Genoa in 2017 for EUR 38 million but failed to live up to expectations and only scored eight times in 57 games.
The rangy 23-year-old has made 18 appearances for the Czech national team, finding then net eight times.
Slavia Prague have put themselves in a good position to reach the Champions League group stage after beating Romanian side Cluj 1:0 away in the first leg of their final qualifying round tie. The Czech side’s goal came from Lukáš Masopust in the first half, while in the second goalkeeper Ondřej Kolář saved a penalty and the hosts hit the woodwork. The second leg takes place in Prague next Wednesday.

Of those arrested 19 could be charged for disturbing the peace while seven may face charges for instigating a riot.
Sparta Prague manager Václav Jílek has accused his players of making
trivial and naive mistakes in defence after a 3:4 defeat at Mladá Boleslav
in Czech football’s First League on Sunday. Sparta have seven points out
of a possible 15 after the first five rounds of the season.
Defending champions Slavia Prague are first on 13 points after a 1:0 win over Jablonec at the weekend. Viktoria Plzen were beaten 2:0 at home by Slovácko; last season’s runners-up have now failed to score in four games.
A fan of the football club Victoria Plzeň has died following a skirmish in
a pub in Kutná Hora. The man died of his injuries on Friday at a hospital
Police say they have identified a suspect in the death of the 36-year-old Plzeň supporter and have filed a motion for his arrest.
The suspect is allegedly a regular at the Kutná Hora pub, where the deceased had been watching his team play a televised away game against a Belgian club.
It is unclear whether football featured in the clash between the two men.
The legendary Czech striker Josef Kadraba has died at the age of 85, the
football club Slavia Prague reported on Twitter on Monday.
Kadraba played for Slavia in the years 1965-1967 helping the club return to the first league.
He played 17 matches for the Czechoslovak national team, scoring 9 goals altogether.
In the 1962 FIFA World Cup he scored a decisive goal against Yugoslavia, helping the Czechoslovak team win the silver medal.
