Czech football league champions Viktoria Plzeň will have an opportunity
on Sunday to get within striking distance of retaining their title, if
can defeat last/place Žižkov and other results go their way. The

Galatasaray Istanbul and Czech international striker Milan Baroš broke his nose at his team’s training session and underwent surgery to fix it, the Turkish club’s website reported on Thursday. The accident reportedly took place when Baroš clashed with defender Gökhan Zan. The 30-year-old footballer is out for at least one game of the Turkish Süper Lig and might have to wear a protective mask when he returns.

Gambrinus liga leaders Sparta Prague came close to defeat on Saturday in their derby against cross-town rivals Slavia. Slavia led 1:0 with 16 minutes remaining, when Přikryl evened the score. He has now scored four goals in as many games. The draw leaves Sparta only a point ahead of second-place Liberec, who won 3:0 against Bohemians. Liberec and Sparta play each other in two week’s time.
The Czech Republic will host the 2015 football European under-21 championships. The decision was announced at a meeting of Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, in Istanbul on Tuesday. The Czech Republic, which was competing against four six other countries to hold the even, received eight out of fourteen votes, the news website idnes.cz reported. Games will be played at four venues: two in Prague and one in Olomouc and Uherské Hradiště.

Chelsea FC with Czech goalkeeper Petr Čech were drawn against the Portuguese side Benfica Lisbon in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The first leg is scheduled for March 27 or 28 in Lisbon, while the second is to be played in London on April 3 or 4. Petr Čech has welcomed the draw but warned Benfica was a strong opponent which knocked out Russia’s FC Zenit. Chelsea FC secured a spot in the Champions League’s last 16 when on Wednesday they defeated Italy’s SSC Napoli 4:1 in extra time after having lost 3:1 in the first leg in Naples.
Czech football national side captain Tomas Rosicky on Monday signed a new contract with England’s Arsenal. The club did not specify the length of the contract saying it was delighted that Rosicky had committed to the club at a time when he was enjoying a great run of form, which has seen him score twice in the last three games, against Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan. Rosicky joined Arsenal in May of 2006.
