The Czech national soccer team are preparing to face Slovakia in an
important game in Prague on Monday night. The hosts need to secure at least
one point from the tie to remain in their group in the second tier of the
Nations League competition
If the Czechs lose the derby with their former federal partners they will
be relegated to League C.
Adding spice to the encounter will be the fact that the Slovaks have a new Czech coach, Pavel Hapel. For his part, the hosts’ manager, Jaroslav Šilhavý, led the Czechs to victory over Slovakia in his first game in charge last month.
Ukraine have already come first in the three-team group. The Nations League is taking place for the first time.
Czech national football team coach Jaroslav Šilhavý has announced the
squad line-up for upcoming internationals against Poland, in a friendly on
Thursday, and against Slovakia, next Monday, in a decisive Nations League
There will be no new faces on the Czech squad, which need a draw against Slovakia to remain in play. The line-up will include midfielder Vladimír Darida, who had been recovering from an injury, defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, and goalkeeper Jiří Pavlenka.
Slavia Prague have returned to the top of the Czech soccer league. They
overcame city rivals Dukla 4:1 on Monday evening to again move two points
in front of reigning champions Viktoria Plzeň and bring the 13th round of
the season to an end.
Two of Slavia’s goals came from midfielder Miroslav Stoch. The result leaves Slavia seven points ahead of rivals Sparta Prague ahead of a derby clash between the two next weekend.
The Czech Republic’s footballers were beaten 1:0 away by Ukraine on
Tuesday night. Though losing their second game under new coach Jaroslav
Šilhavý, the Czechs won plaudits for their style of play.
The result means Ukraine have won group B1 and the Czechs are now competing with Slovakia to avoid relegation to a lower level of the Nations League; a draw against the Slovaks in Prague next month would secure their place and offer the possibility of a place at Euro 2020.
