Viktoria Plzeň have boosted their chances of coming third in their group
in football’s Champions League after a 2:1 away win over CSKA Moscow on
Tuesday evening. The Czech side went behind in Moscow before overturning
the deficit with goals from Roman Procházka, who had earlier missed a
penalty, and Lukáš Hejda.
With the two qualifying positions in the group won by Real Madrid and Roma, Plzeň are vying with CSKA for third spot and a place in the Europa League after Christmas. With both on equal points, Plzeň welcome Roma on the final match day in a fortnight while CSKA visit Real.
Sevilla have gone top of the Spanish football league after their Czech
goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík kept a clean sheet in a 1:0 win over Valladolid
on Sunday. It was the fourth time Vaclík had managed to shut out all of
the opposition’s chances this season. The 29-year-old joined Sevilla from
Swiss side Basel in the summer.
Sevilla moved one point clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga after the Catalan side played out a 1:1 draw with third-placed Atletico Madrid.
The Czech Republic have avoided relegation from the second level of
European football’s Nations League after a 1:0 win over Slovakia in
Prague on Monday night. The only goal of the game came from Roma striker
The hosts had needed just one point to avoid going down to League C in the new competition and Slovakia were in the end relegated from a group that had already been won by Ukraine.
The result was the third victory in four games in charge for the Czech Republic’s recently appointed manager, Jaroslav Šilhavý.

one point from the tie to remain in their group in the second tier of the
Nations League competition
If the Czechs lose the derby with their former federal partners they will
be relegated to League C.
Adding spice to the encounter will be the fact that the Slovaks have a new Czech coach, Pavel Hapel. For his part, the hosts’ manager, Jaroslav Šilhavý, led the Czechs to victory over Slovakia in his first game in charge last month.
Ukraine have already come first in the three-team group. The Nations League is taking place for the first time.
