The young Czech soccer striker Patrik Schick scored twice for Sampdoria as they beat Cagliari 3:0 in the Italian Cup on Wednesday night. In his only previous outing for the Genovese team the 20-year-old – who joined Sampdoria from Sparta Prague in the summer – scored against Juventus in a league game. Schick has three full international caps.
There were mixed results for Czech football clubs in the Europa League on Thursday night. Sparta Prague beat Southampton 1:0 at home and will proceed to the next stage of the competition in the Spring. Liberec kept their hopes alive with a 3:0 win against Qarabag. But Viktoria Plzeň lost 4:1 away against AC Roma and are out of the competition.
In football, Sparta|Prague closed the gap on the leaders of the top Czech league after a 3:0 win at home against |Karviná on Sunday. Sparta remain in fifth place on 26 points but close some of the gap with league leaders Viktoria Plzeň who could only manage a goalless draw against Mladá Boleslav on Saturday. Plzeň have 33 points, two points ahead of second placed Zlín.
The Czech Republic’s footballers drew 1:1 with Denmark in a friendly in Mladá Boleslav on Tuesday night. The hosts’ goal was scored by Antonín Barák of Slavia Prague, who was making his international debut, while another newcomer, Jaromír Zmrhal, hit the post. It was the last game of the year for the Czechs, who are fourth in their World Cup qualifying group after a win against Norway on Friday.
The Czech national football squad, which had been struggling in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup got their first win on Friday evening. The team defeated Norway by a score of 2-1, getting goals from newcomers Michal Krmeníček, in his international debut, and Jaromír Zmrhal, for the first time in the starting roster. Norway got one back but overall the Czechs had more opportunities, coming close to adding a third goal.
