Sparta Prague are top of their group in football’s Europa League after a 1:0 away win on Thursday over Hapoel Be’er Sheva of Israel. The only goal of the game came from substitute Matěj Pulkrab on 71 minutes. In the same competition Viktoria Plzeň reduced their chances of advancing with a 2:1 home defeat to the Romanian side. The same goes for Slovan Liberec, who were beaten 1:3 at home to Fiorentina of Italy.
Zlín have lost for the first time this season in Czech soccer’s top flight. The club’s unexpected positive start to their 2016–2017 campaign earned comparisons in the media with Leicester City, who stunned the football world by winning the English Premier League last season. However, Zlín’s 10-game unbeaten streak came to an end on Saturday night when they went down 2:0 to Teplice. Zlín avoided relegation last season by just three points and play at a 6,000-capacity stadium.
The Czech Republic drew 0:0 with Azerbaijan in Ostrava on Tuesday night in a qualifier for the football World Cup in Russia in 2018. Coach Karel Jarolím made seven changes from the team that lost 3:0 to Germany at the weekend but the move brought no improvement up front. The Czechs have not scored any goals in three World Cup qualifiers and with only two points to date are second from bottom in their group.
The Czech national soccer team are preparing for a World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan in Ostrava on Tuesday night. The Czechs have only one point from the first two games in their campaign to reach Russia in two years’ time and coach Karel Jarolím says he believes his players will not allow the gap between them and group leaders Germany and Azerbaijan – both of whom are on six points – to widen.
In football, the Czech Republic was brushed aside 0:3 in a confident performance by Germany in their World Cup group qualification match in Hamburg on Saturday night. There were a brace of goals from Thomas Muller and one from Toni Kroos. The German team outclassed the Czechs, who lacked possession for large parts of the match, and often looked as though they could easily increase the margin. Czech manager Karel Jarolím’s squad, still to find the net in the campaign so far, face Azerbaijan at home on Tuesday.
The Czech Under-21 football team has booked its place for the European Championships being hosted by Poland next year. The Czechs beat Moldova 4:1 at home on Friday night. Their place in the finals was secured after Belgium lost 3:0 against Montenegro. That means that while other teams have games in hand the Czechs cannot be overtaken. Czech prospects had been dented after a defeat last month against Belgium.
