Czech footballer Vladimír Darida, who plays for Hertha Berlin, is out for up to six weeks with an ankle injury requiring surgery, meaning he will miss upcoming national team qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup. Former Arsenal and Czech midfield star Tomáš Rosický will not take part in his new club, Sparta’s Prague’s, Europa League away game at English club Southampton on Thursday night. The 35-year-old says that he needs more time to regain match fitness. Rosický came on for 20 minutes on Saturday in the Prague club’s 2:2 draw against Mladá Boleslav. Given an ecstatic reception by the home crowd, Rosický was unable to break the deadlock.
In football, former Czech national coach Michal Bílek has been appointed as the manager of top Czech league club Jihlava. Bílek managed the Czech national team from 2009 to 2013. Earlier, he took Sparta Prague to a league and cup double in 2007. The 52-year-old’s last management post was at Georgian club Dynamo Tiblisi. Jihlava are currently struggling near the bottom of the top Czech league with just two points from the first six games.
In football, former national captain and Arsenal midfield star, Tomáš Rosický, played in front of his home fans for the first time at Sparta Prague on Saturday. Rosický was brought off the substitutes bench on the 72nd minute to loud applause from the around 14,000 fans. But Rosický, who last played for Sparta 16 years ago, was unable to make the difference in a disappointing home performance against Mladá Boleslav with the final score 2:2. Sparta now trail the surprise league leaders, Zlín by a point.
In football, new Czech manager of the national team, Karel Jarolím, has said that he sees room for improvement mainly in the finishing of his team. The Czech team completed a goalless draw in its first competitive game, a world cup qualifier, under Jarolím against Northern Ireland on Sunday. The manager pointed out in a press conference Wednesday that of the 15 shots during the game just one was on goal. Jarolím added that he counted on calling up Under-21 striker Patrik Schick to the main team and also hoped that former captain Tomáš Rosický would be willing once again to play for the national side. He said he would stay in touch with midfielder Rosický, who recently signed for Sparta Prague, with a view to his return to the national team.
In football, Slavia Prague have announced the somewhat surprising appointment of Jaroslav Šilhavý as its new manager. Šilhavý has only been the manager of Dukla Prague since May. He is best known for his managerial stint at Slovan Liberec where the club won the Czech league title. Slavia sacked previous manager Dušan Uhrin junior after a disappointing start to the season.
