Viktoria Plzeň have entered the winter break in Czech soccer’s top flight as league leaders after beating Jablonec 1:0 on Monday night. That result meant they could not be overtaken by reigning champions Sparta Prague, who came from behind to overcome Brno 2:1. The top two still have one Europa League game each before Christmas; Sparta have already reached the next stage but Plzeň cannot advance in the competition.

Petr Čech remains one match shy of tying the clean sheet record set by David James in the Premier League. On Sunday, his club Arsenal appeared to be on its way against Norwich City, going up 1:0 on a chip from Mesut Ozil. But the Canaries tied the match before half-time. The game ended 1:1. Čech thanked fans for traveling to the away game and tried to take positives from the result in the social media. Arsenal are fourth in the standings.
The Czech football club Sparta will continue in the Europa League in the spring, after defeating the Greek club Asteras Tripolis 1:0 in Prague on Thursday night. The same evening, Viktoria Pilsen lost a chance to advance after losing 2:1 to Dinamo Minsk. Liberec also lost – 2:1 – to the Portuguese team Bragga but still has a chance to advance: the team needs to win its final group stage match against Marseille.
In football, Czech international Petr Čech and his Arsenal team kept alive their hopes of progressing past the group stage in the European Champions League on Tuesday night. Arsenal won 3:0 against Dinamo Zagreb with Čech little tested between the posts. In the same group, Bayern Munich thrashed Olympiakos Pireus 4:0. That means that Arsenal can progress to the knock-out stage if they can convincingly beat the Greek team in the last game.

Czech football striker Václav Kadlec is set to transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt to Danish club Midtjylland in January 2016. The 23-year old Czech attacker will be joining another Czech, left back Filip Novák, who moved to the Danish club earlier this year. Midtjylland has signed a contract with Kadlec until the end of 2019 and paid some two million euro (around 54 million crowns) for the Czech player.
Qualification by Sweden and Ukraine for EURO 2016 on Tuesday means the Czech Republic finished in pot 3 for the group draw to be held in less than a month. There was a chance until the final results were posted that the Czech Republic could end up in pot 2, alongside Italy, Russia, Switzerland, Austria and Croatia. The draw will be held on December 12 in Paris.
The Czech Republic’s footballers were beaten 3:1 by Poland in a friendly game in Wroclaw on Tuesday night, with the visitors’ only goal coming from midfielder Ladislav Krejčí. The encounter between two nations who have qualified for Euro 2016 saw goalkeeper Petr Čech equal the Czech national caps record of 118 set by Karel Poborský. The 33-year-old, who made his international debut in 2002, has refused to speculate on the eventual record he may set before the end of his career.
