The Czech runner Pavel Maslák has taken gold in the 400 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Sweden’s Gothenburg. In doing so, Maslák – who was in front for virtually the entire race on Sunday – set a new national record of 45.66 seconds; that was also the fastest time achieved in Europe this season.
The Olympic javelin champion Barbora Špotáková has been named Czech Sportsperson of the Year. Špotáková, who is 31, received the award, which is voted on by members of the Club of Sports Journalists, at a ceremony in Prague on Wednesday evening. She also won the prize four years ago, when she took her first Olympic gold. The athlete recently announced she was taking a year out in 2013 to have her first child.
The Czech Olympic javelin champion Barbora Špotáková has announced that she is taking a career break due to pregnancy. Špotáková, who is 31, said she would return to competition in time for the 2014 season. The popular athlete took gold at the last two Olympics and also hold’s the women’s world record in the javelin. At the weekend, she was named Czech Athlete of the Year for the sixth time in a row.

Barbora Špotáková, specialist in the javelin, has been named Czech Athlete of the Year for the sixth year running, recognition for her gold medal win at the London Olympics this summer as well as her top finish in the Diamond League. The award, in its 50th year, is decided by athletics officials, trainers and sports journalists. Athletes Zuzana Hejnová and Vítězslav Veselý came in 2nd and 3rd.

For the Czech Republic, the London Olympics proved to be the most successful summer games since Atlanta 16 years ago. With four gold, three silver and three bronze medals, the country ranked 19th in the international medal count. Some of the athletes made the trip back home as soon as their events were over but on Monday two special flights brought the rest of the team –including a number of medalists - back home. Members of the Czech Olympic Team return to Prague from London on Monday on two special flights. The first plane which arrived at Prague’s Kbely airport in the afternoon carried among others the bronze crew of the men’s four kayak; the second flight, to land at 8:30 PM, will carry gold medallists Barbora Špotáková, David Svoboda and Jaroslav Kulhavý. The Czech team won ten medals at the XXXth Summer Olympic games – four gold, three silver and three bronze medals – which ranked the Czech Republic 19th in the medal tally.
