Czech athlete Barbora Špotáková came first in the javelin at a Diamond League meeting in Monaco on Thursday evening. Just a week before the European Athletics Championships get underway in Barcelona, the Olympic champion and world record holder topped the podium with a throw of 65.76 metres. Another Czech medal hopeful in Barcelona will be Petr Svoboda; he finished fourth in the men’s 110 metres hurdles at the Diamond League meet.
Roman Šebrle, who holds the word-record in the decathlon, will not compete in the 2010 European Athletics Championships to be held in Barcelona later this month. Due to injuries which have been plaguing him throughout the season, the decathlete has decided against asking the Czech Athletic Federation for a wild card. However, he will still be attending the championships, since he is preparing to apply for membership in the athlete’s commission of the European Athletic Association. Šebrle, who is 35, said he does not intend to retire in the near future.

Athlete Eliška Klučinová equalled a long-standing Czech national record in the heptathlon at a meeting in Kladno on Wednesday. The record of 6268 was set by Zuzana Lajbnerová in 1988. Klučinová beat finished ahead of Marina Goncharova of Russia, who had 6,182, while Lyudmyla Yosypenko of Ukraine finished third. She said her joy was all the greater because her success had come in front of friends and Czech fans in Kladno.
Czech record holder Roman Šebrle withdrew from a decathlon meeting in Kladno, central Bohemia, on Tuesday, missing the last opportunity to qualify for the European Athletic Championships held in Barcelona in the summer. Šebrle, who pulled out due to a thigh injury after the first event, said he hoped he would be granted a wild card to be able to compete at the championships.
