Czech decathlete Roman Sebrle has been voted the second best European athlete of the year. Mr. Sebrle comes second only to Finnish javelin-thrower Tero Pitkamaki in the poll conducted by the European Athletic Association. This is Roman Sebrle's highest ever ranking in this poll - he came third back in 2004, having taken the Olympic decathlon title earlier that year. The results for the women's competition were released on Thursday, and saw Czech javelinist Barbora Spotakova coming seventh.

The coach of the Czech team at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Vaclav Fiser, says he is very satisfied with the country's results, which he pointed out were the most successful since the formation of the Czech Republic. Roman Sebrle took gold in the decathlon, while Barbora Spotakova became javelin world champion and Katerina Badurova achieved her best ever result with silver in the pole vault; two golds and a silver leaves the Czech Republic sixth in the overall the medals table.

Championships in Osaka. The world title had been the only medal lacking in
the Olympic champion's collection. Sebrle's victory came in the tightest
decathlon in the history of the world championships, with the 32-year-old
Czech finishing only 32 points clear of his nearest rival.
It has been a rather successful world championships for the Czech Republic: as well as Roman Sebrle's medal, Barbora Spotakova won gold in the javelin on Friday, while Katerina Badurova took silver in the pole vault earlier in the week.
Czech pole-vaulter Katerina Badurova has won silver and broken the Czech national record at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. Her first vault of 475 cm in the final of the event on Tuesday broke her own previous record by 5 cm. It was also enough to earn her second place in the discipline, 5 cm below Russian world-record holder Yelena Isinbayeva.
Czech women's 400-m runner Zuzana Hejnova has broken the Czech national record at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan. The 20-year-old's time of 55.04 seconds in the semi-final of the event on Tuesday knocked nearly eight tenths of a second off the previous best Czech time in the discipline. Unfortunately, Hejnova's performance was not good enough for her to qualify for Wednesday's final.
