In Sports News this week: there are no medals for the Czech Republic at the World Indoor Athletics Championships, while Roman Šebrle is stretchered off with a hamstring injury in the heptathlon; Slavia Prague drop two points in the race for the Czech football league title with a draw against Ostrava in front of almost 17,000 fans; and speed skater Martina Sáblíková retains her world title in Japan.
Olympic decathlon champion Roman Šebrle was forced to withdraw from the heptathlon in the world indoor championships on Sunday after suffering a hamstring injury in the 60 metres hurdles. The Czech pulled up after the second hurdle and had to be taken off the track on a stretcher. Šebrle was lying in second place in the competition after four events, 136 points behind Bryan Clay of the United States.

Women’s javelin world champion Barbora Spotakova has been named Czech “Athlete of the Year”. The survey pools votes from organisers, specialists in the field of sport, and journalists. Spotakova won with 1,187 votes - 46 ahead of last year’s winner decathlon world champion Roman Sebrle. It is the first time Ms Spotakova has been named top Czech athlete.
Czech decathlete Roman Sebrle has been voted the second best European athlete of the year. Mr. Sebrle comes second only to Finnish javelin-thrower Tero Pitkamaki in the poll conducted by the European Athletic Association. This is Roman Sebrle's highest ever ranking in this poll - he came third back in 2004, having taken the Olympic decathlon title earlier that year. The results for the women's competition were released on Thursday, and saw Czech javelinist Barbora Spotakova coming seventh.
