The number of inhabitants in the Czech Republic rose by 9,200 in the first
half of the year to now stand at a total population of 10,588,063,
according to the Czech Statistical Office. One of the main factors in the
increase has been immigration, primarily from Ukraine and Slovakia.
New Ukrainian immigrants numbered 2,600, Slovaks 2,100, and Vietnamese 700.
A Czech tourist has drowned in the sea near the Ayia Napa resort in Cyprus on Monday afternoon, the daily Cyprus Mail informed on Tuesday. The 59-year-old Czech was found unconscious by lifeguards in the sea off the Aya Thekla beach. Police have ruled out foul play as no external injuries were detected.
A new project run by a team of foreigners living in Prague aims to map ethnic restaurants in the city. The Czech Friendly team pinpoints authentic family-run foreign restaurants, pop-ups and food trucks and present them through a printed map and a mobile app. It also collects the best authentic recipes and presents the life stories of the places’ owners. An exhibition dedicated to the famous shoe designer Manolo Blahnik is now on display at Prague’s Kampa Museum. Entitled Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes, the exhibition explores the nearly 50-year-long career of the visionary designer. The iconic shoes, which many women know from films and TV series, such as the Sex and the City or Marie Antoinette, will be on display at the Kampa Museum until November 12.
An exhibition dedicated to the famous footwear designer Manolo Blahnik got underway at Prague’s Kampa Museum on Friday. Entitled Manolo Blahnik: The Art of Shoes, it explores the visionary designer’s 45 year long career, featuring more than 200 pairs of shoes and over 80 sketches by Blahnik from the 1970’s till today. Manolo Blahnik, whose father was born in Czechoslovakia, becoame world famous thanks to the series Sex in the City and the film Marie Antoinette.The travelling exhibition, which has already been on display in Milan and St Petersburg, will be on display in Prague until November 12.
Among the many outdoor events taking place in the Czech capital in the summer is the traditional get-together of designers who come to sell their goods at the Prague Design Market that takes place five times a year. Last weekend the event took place at the National Theatre piazzetta which now bears the name of the country’s late president Vaclav Havel.
