Czech fisheries are gearing up for the annual Christmas carp sales around the country, when sales of home-bred carp go through the roof due to the traditional Czech Christmas dinner of fried carp and potato salad. Although carp makes up for close to 90 percent of the fresh water fish bred in the Czech Republic many Czechs only ever eat it once a year- the rest is sold abroad.

Boy and Girl Scouts brought a modern-day symbol of Christmas to the Czech Republic on Saturday in keeping with a tradition begun in the 1980s in neighbouring Austria, the Czech News Agency reported. The program was inaugurated in Austria in 1986 as part of a charitable relief mission for handicapped children and people in need. The light was transported to Brno using several lanterns and will again be spread throughout the Czech Republic over the course of the Christmas holidays, organisers confirmed. Members of the public brought their own lanterns to Brno's train station in order to light them from the flame.
The Defense Ministry has filed a criminal complaint against a man who attended a commemorative ceremony honouring Czechoslovak war veterans wearing an SS uniform. The ceremony took place in the town of Rakovník on Veterans' Day, November 11, and the man wearing a Nazi uniform stood next to the guard of honor at a memorial to Czechoslovak pilots from Rakovník who served in the British Royal Air Force. The incident caused public outrage at the event itself and was later widely commented on in the media and on social networks. The mayor of Rakovník and the town council distanced themselves from the ceremony and the Defense Ministry slammed the police for failing to take action.
Czech consumers had the opportunity on Saturday to donate in the fourth annual National Food Drive. Last year, Czechs donated 236 tons - this year organizers are hoping to hit a target 300 tons.
November 11th, or St. Martin’s Day, has always been associated with the first snow reflected in the popular saying “St. Martin arrives on a white horse”. In recent years the day has come to be known for something else altogether: young wine from the year’s harvest goes on sale in shops and at open air markets around the country to light up the autumn gloom with some summer sun.
Hygiene officers inspecting Prague’s Vietnamese Sapa market uncovered 35 tons of uncertified frozen meat in storage, the ctk news agency reported. According to the inspectors the meat was sold to Vietnamese restaurants around town, presenting a serious health risk. Sapa management faces a million crown fine. The dance musician and producer went on to release a host of Bomb the Bass albums, as well as producing the likes of Neneh Cherry and Depeche Mode and remixing tracks by David Bowie, Massive Attack and many more huge names. Today, believe it or not, Simenon is to be found behind the counter of Brixton Balls, a meatballs takeaway that he opened on Prague’s Korunní St. earlier this summer.
