Thomas Szende, a Budapest-born management consultant moved to the Czech Republic in 2005 where, along with his wife, he founded the Prague Thrift Store. When we met up to talk about his successful endeavour, I noted that the stores are charity-oriented, which is quite a rare thing to see in the Czech Republic.
Quirky market stalls have been appearing and disappearing during Christmas and Easter in spots like the Old Town Square for a number of years. But recently, they have become a far more permanent feature at a number of locations across Prague and the Czech Republic. The main appeal of these farmers’ markets is that they can offer customers the kind of produce one can’t and won’t find in supermarkets. The large chains require guaranteed volumes of bulk goods and of a standard quality. Farmers’ markets offer the opposite: local goods from small producers
Motifs from traditional Moravian folk dress, known as ‘kroje’, are enjoying new popularity in modern fashion, both casual and higher-end. A number of artists and designers have taken inspiration from folklore and updated motifs for the present-day. They hail largely from parts of Moravia where folklore still plays an important role in the Christian calendar, annual events including historic processions and celebrations such as the wine harvest.
Old Town Square in the middle of a typically busy tourist-filled summer’s day. In front are several food stalls, which are a relatively new feature for the Old Town. They are selling crepes and hams and sausages and one unmistakable stall is selling what is known as Trdelník. Two Czech chefs, Jan Davídek and Antonín Bradáč, have won the international competition known as the Thailand Culinary Challenge. The duo, who went by the team name of Czech Chefs and were the only European representatives to compete, beat other elite teams from countries including China, South Korea, the USA, and Malaysia. The top prize was 10 thousand US dollars. The competition took place over two days, with the chefs preparing national cuisine on the first day, and Thai cuisine on the second.
While Czechs are among Europe’s most prodigious consumers of beer, the percentage sold in the country’s pubs has fallen to a historic low. This has led breweries to push their own branded restaurants, linking the pub experience to sport and quality dining and introducing other innovations, the newspaper Hospodářské noviny reported on Wednesday.
According to the daily Právo, Czechs most often take loans to buy home appliances, renovate their apartment, pay off earlier debts, or buy a car. But every spring and summer, there is a rise in a number of those willing to take loans to pay for upcoming vacations, by the sea, and sometimes more exotic locations. Experts warn taking loans for vacations is often not a good idea: some two percent of Czechs who do, often find themselves in financial difficulties afterwards, having trouble paying off their debts.
Two Czech children are reported to have been seriously injured in a boat collision off the island of Hvar in Croatia, local media have reported. The two girls, both under the age of ten, are reported to have been airlifted to a hospital in Split in serious condition. The slobodnadalmacia.hr news site says one of them underwent brain surgery and both remain in intensive care.
