The Czech branch of the International Press Institute has called on MPs to exercise maximum responsibility in the choice of two new members of the council overseeing the Czech News Agency wire service. Respekt reported that in a first round of voting ANO backed an anti-Semitic candidate who looks likely to win a place in the second, a situation that has been condemned by the Federation of Jewish Communities. I discussed the journalists’ appeal with Michal Klíma, head of the International Press Institute in this country.
The use of social networks among Czechs has seen a slight drop, according
to a survey conducted by AMI Digital Index.
While last year 80 percent of Internet users in the country went on social networks daily, now their number is at 77 percent and the average time spent on social networks has dropped from 149 to 143 minutes a day.
Although Facebook and You Tube remain the most widely-used social networks, the popularity of Facebook, in particular, is dropping, while the popularity of Instagram is on the rise.
The website of public broadcaster Czech Television was the victim of a
cyber attack on Tuesday. Spokesperson Karolína Blinková said the
attackers had targetted the online broadcasting of an ice hockey match
between the Czech Republic and Switzerland.
Ms. Blinková said the attacks had come from both within the Czech Republic and abroad. Czech Television’s website was accessible once again from around 1:30 pm but some users were unable to log onto the CT 24 news site.
Czech Television, the country’s national public broadcaster, has reason to be proud: it will have a strong representation at the 59th Monte Carlo Television Festival. Its two-part real-life mining drama Dukla 61, directed by David Ondříček picked up two nominations and its popular comedy series Dubbing Street received three nominations for Golden Nymph Awards.
The Interior Ministry wants to focus on hate speech on social networks and
sites spreading fake news, according to its 2018 report on extremism and
priorities outlined for the future.
The ministry says verbal expressions of racism and xenophobia are concentrated around sites featuring fake news, conspiracy theories and disinformation.
It wants to launch a counter-offensive in the form of a campaign based on reliable information on migration and integration of foreign nationals in Czech society.
The Czech government aims to obtain much more revenue in taxation from the likes of Google and Facebook, Hospodářské noviny reported on Thursday. Under a planned new digital tax scheme, the huge multinationals would be forced to pay taxes in the place they make earnings, in this case the Czech Republic, the business daily said.
The Czech Republic has slid further down the press freedom index published
by the non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders.
On a list on 180 countries, the Czech Republic now ranks 40th on the ladder, down from 34th the previous year.
In the press freedom index for 2014 the country ranked 12th in the world.
The US has also seen a marked slide and now ranks 48th, while press freedom is thriving in Norway, Finland, Sweden and The Netherlands.
Bottom of the ladder are North Korea and Eritrea.
Prima TV, the second most popular commercial TV station in the country, has announced it is teaming up with CNN International Commercial (CNNIC) to launch a 24-hour news platform. The CNN Prima News channel should combine international news coverage by the CNN with national reporting covered by Prima.
Voice of America (VOA), today the largest U.S. government-funded international broadcaster, ceased its Czech language broadcasts exactly 15 years ago today, on 27 February 2004, shortly ahead of the country’s accession to the European Union.
