The National Gallery in Prague has launched its first mobile application, called Hidden Secrets of Medieval Paintings. It offers visitors an interactive viewing of selected panel paintings, which are on display in the Convent of St. Agnes of Bohemia, and uncovers some interesting facts about their origin as well as some secrets hidden under the top layer.
The Czech Republic is known for its skilled glassmakers, getting commissions for lighting installations and glass artworks from palaces, luxury hotels and residences the world over. However this year the studio of Czech glassmaker Zdeněk Lhotský concluded work on a truly unique project – a four-tonne glass case that will serve as a sarcophagus for Denmark’s Queen Margarethe II.
Czechs have been in the forefront of worldwide attempts to save Syria’s significant archaeological heritage. The Czech National Museum has been one of the major players in those moves and on Wednesday it opened an exhibition in Prague outlining what has been lost and what has been saved during the country’s civil war.
A mobile museum on rails is criss-crossing the Czech Republic is a bid to recreate the exploits of Czech soldiers serving in allied armies during WWI. The main focus is on the so-called Czechoslovak legionnaires in Russia, when they started out fighting against Austro-Hungarian and German armies and eventually found themselves battling the new Bolshevik regime in an epic struggle along around 5,000 kilometres of the Trans-Siberian railway.
A joint Czech-Slovak exhibition marking 100th anniversary of the foundation
of Czechoslovakia was launched in Bratislava on Thursday. The event at
Bratislava castle was attended by Slovak and Czech Prime Ministers, Petr
Pellegrini and Andrej Babiš, and Slovak President Andrej Kiska.
After a stint in Bratislava the show will move to the Czech National Museum in October, which by then will have reopened after major renovations.
Artist Sonya Darrow spends her time in the Czech Republic and in Iowa, two places where she feels at home. Her interesting exhibition “Stezky/Pathways” recently opened at the American Center in Prague. I spoke to her about how she explores the questions of identity and cultural connections though her work and started off by asking her how she become involved in the Czech community.
Czech astronomer Petr Horálek started his career at the Academy of Science’s Astronomical Institute. During this time, he fell in love with astrophotography, becoming one of the most respected Czechs in the field. He is one of the photo ambassadors of the European Southern Observatory in Chile and several of his pictures were featured as NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day. Horálek specializes in capturing rare night-sky phenomena and hopes that his unique shots will draw attention to the problem of light-pollution.
An exhibition showcasing items and documents from Czech collections recently listed on a UNESCO list of world documentary treasures has got underway in Prague. Visitors can see the Great Siege of Malta Map from the 16th century, the Kynžvart daguerreotype or items from composer Leoš Janáček’s archive.
Art lovers in Prague can now appreciate non-conformity in a remarkable exhibition featuring contemporary avant-garde British artists at the Černá Labuť Art Gallery. The eleven featured artists fall outside of mainstream and ‘favored’ art movements in the United Kingdom. Among them are Charles Thomson, Anna Keen, Joe Machine and Ella Guru.
The Ostrava internal police is investigating a case of suspected breach of
ethics on the part of three officers who posed for a picture with Jiří
Kajínek, who was convicted of serial contract murder and released on a
presidential pardon last year, after serving 23 years of his life sentence.
The officers were on duty and wearing uniforms at the time. The photo appeared on social networks where it caused considerable controversy. Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar denounced the officers‘ behaviour saying it was in very bad taste.
Kajinek became something of a celebrity after escaping from the country’s maximum security prison several years ago.
