Starting this Sunday, carriers in the Czech Republic can start registering
in the new electronic toll system. The new satellite system, operated by
the consortium CzechToll/SkyToll, will be officially launched on December
Hauliers using toll roads will be obliged to have their vehicles fitted with a new on-board unit by that date.
The launch of the new toll system was preceded by months of legal battles with the company Kapsch over the result of a tender for the new toll system operator. The Austrian company has run the Czech highway toll system since 2007.
The passengers of an intercity bus narrowly escaped a disastrous crash as
the bus driver collapsed and fell out of his seat on a busy highway on
One of the passengers promptly jumped behind the wheel and drove the bus safely to the nearest petrol station.
Witnesses say the driver fainted and was thrown from his seat as the bus swerved and hit the guardrail on the roadside.
Police have commended the passenger for his fast response and courage. There were about 50 people travelling on the bus at the time of the incident.No one was hurt.
The bus driver is in hospital undergoing tests.
The number of aviation accidents in the Czech Republic is growing, with 91
accidents reported last year, which is an increase of 19 accidents
year-on-year, according to data published by the Institute for the
Investigation of Aviation Accidents.
Most of the accidents involved small aircraft used for sport or recreational purposes. Eleven people lost their lives in the crashes. None of the accidents involved large commercial aircraft.
The institute says that despite the increase, the Czech Republic maintains a high safety aviation standard.
Air traffic between the Czech Republic and Russia will continue to operate
without restrictions, and will even intensify next year, the Czech aviation
authorities reported after successfully resolving an air traffic dispute
The dispute pertaining to Russia’s decision to severely limit the number of Czech flights over Siberia resulted in the cancellation of several flights in June of this year as the two countries revoked flight permits for each other’s air carriers in a tit for tat move.
Both sides subsequently temporarily released operations until September to resolve the dispute.
Russia has long been one of the busiest destinations for traffic from the Czech Republic.
An incident in which a Smartwings flight from Greece failed to report an
engine shutdown and continued the flight to Prague for another 2 hours and
20 minutes on one engine has been assessed as pilot error, according to the
results of an internal investigation conducted by the carrier, as stated in
documents the company handed over to the Civil Aviation authority last
Smartwings originally denied that the pilots had violated safety regulations, saying that the crew had proceeded in accordance with the safety and operational procedures.
The Aviation Authority is still investigating the incident.
The private Czech train and bus operator Leo Express is set to deploy new trains, manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC, the Czech News Agency reported on Wednesday. The new Sirius train units should start operating next year. The total value of the investment, which includes the delivery of three units and an option for 30 more, exceeds five billion crowns.
The number of deaths on Czech roads caused by speeding has started to
increase, according to the data released by the country’s Centre for
Transport Research on Friday.
Last year, 218 people died in accidents involving speeding, which is an increase by one fifth on the previous year. The trend is set to continue, with 104 fatalities recorded between the start of January and the end of July.
Speeding is one of the main causes of traffic accidents in the Czech Republic and claims the highest number of fatalities.
