The European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Věra
Jourová wants the double standard of food products in the EU to be put on
the list of illegal business practices in the EU.¨The commissioner made
the announcement at a press briefing in Prague on Friday.
This means that consumers would be in a position to sue a company over the practice. The list is to be reviewed by the Commission in April.
Meanwhile, a special working group made up of representatives from 15 EU member states is working on a control mechanism which would gradually root out the practice.
In recent years, Czech two way trade with the United Kingdom has advanced by leaps and bound. The country was already the fourth biggest Czech trade partner two years ago in 2015, following first placed Germany, Slovakia, and just trailing Poland in third place. But the current trading environment for Czechs in Britain is a tough one.
A Prague court has halted a case centred on Communist persecution of kulaks following the death of a man believed to have been the country’s oldest defendant. His alleged crimes took place in the early 1950s when Czechoslovak agriculture was being collectivised, often using extremely harsh measures.
Thousands of ducklings were burned to death in a fire at an agricultural
facility in Hlušice, East Bohemia on Friday night. Around 3,500 birds died
in the blaze, which occurred in a hall measuring about 50 by 20 metres.
The causes of the fire are being investigated, a spokesperson for the local fire service told the Czech News Agency.
Food consumption in the Czech Republic last year rose by 1.9 percent with
the average consumption per person climbing to 785.6 kilos of food.
Consumption of milk and other dairy products rose by 2.1 percent, the Czech
Statistical Office announced.
Consumption of fruit increased by 2.0 percent and of vegetables by 3.0 percent. Meat consumption rose to 80.3 kilos, that’s around twice the average of 1950 consumption.
The office said 2016 stood out for the all time record amount of rice eaten by Czechs. The average came to 6.5 kilos per person, up by 0.6 percent on the previous year.
Jiří Milek, head of an agricultural and food production company Úsovsko,
is a candidate to be agriculture minister in the minority cabinet prepared
by ANO leader Andrej Babiš, the daily Právo reported on Thursday.
The news was confirmed by Mr Babiš, who said Milek was ready to leave his business if he became minister. Milek, who was an unsuccessful candidate to be an ANO party deputy in 2013, was recommended for the post by the Agrarian Chamber.
