The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has warned the public about the dangers of using the Miracle Mineral Supplement which can be purchased over the internet. The supplement is presented as a miracle cure for a wide spectrum of serious illnesses ranging from AIDS to hepatitis. It promises to cleanse the blood of bacteria, viruses and fungi leaving the body regenerated. The Food Inspection authority says that tests have shown the substance to contain chemicals dangerous to health – such as those used to clean swimming pools – and taking the substance as prescribed could result in intestinal damage.
The total area of Moravian and Bohemian vineyards has almost tripled over the last 90 years, according to figures released by the Czech Statistical Office on Thursday. The area grew from less than 6,000 hectares in 1920 to over 16,000 hectares last year. Wine consumption has also risen – from five litres per capita in 1948 to more than 16 litres in 2008. A vast majority – some 95 percent – of Czech vineyards are located in Moravia. Last year, Czech winemakers produced a record 840,000 hectolitres of wine.
The first gluten-free Czech beer for people who suffer from coeliac disease is set to go on the domestic market. The beer was developed by specialists from the Research Institute of Brewing and Malting in Prague and will be licensed for production by the Žatecký brewery. Gluten-free has been available on the Czech market before, but was expensive and tasted differently than classic Czech beer. Estimates put the number of coeliac sufferers in the Czech Republic at one to two percent of the population, or at least 100,000 people.
I don’t know what it is about the area where my wife, my son, and I live in the Czech capital that it can’t have a decent pub. Crazy as it may sound, it’s true: the establishment closest to our home, and there’s only one, is lousy. I’m not even a big pub-goer - but I wouldn’t mind going once in a while if I could.
Twenty-two tons of butter imported from neighbouring Germany has had to be taken off the shelves after failing to meet quality control norms, the Czech Standards and Quality Control Office reported on Friday. According to the head of the office, Josef Duben, the butter does not present a health risk. It was taken off shelves because it contained significantly more water than EU norms permit.
Southern Moravia has been celebrating “vinobraní” – in other words the results of this year’s grape harvest. At the weekend the towns of Znojmo and Mikulov, which are steeped in the wine-making tradition, saw festivities kick-off with many thousands of people taking part. As every year, celebrations included the consumption of the young Czech wine burčák. Producers say wine production suffered this year due to poor weather conditions but said visitors and attendees at the weekend celebrations enjoyed themselves none the less. This year’s festivities included local parades on Sunday led by actors portraying King Václav IV and his retinue. Actress Jitka Schneiderová – who hails from the region – was among those taking part.
The Sun in a Glass festival is expecting to host more microbreweries in one place than ever before, with 43 registered so far. 150 different beers will be presented at the festival, which begins September 18 at the Purkmistr restaurant in Plzeň Téměř. Organisers say the majority of the brewers will be small restaurants and publicans producing 200 to 1000 hectolitres a year. Each will present three or four types of beer. Two larger breweries and three Bavarian microbreweries will also be attending.
