Karolína Plíšková wins career 10th title in Stuttgart; Plzeň on verge of league title; Baroš secures valuable points for Ostrava; Krpálek crowned European champion; Sparta hockey club appoint Krupp coach.
The Czech women’s tennis number one, Karolína Plíšková, has won the 10th WTA title of her career, and her first of 2018, after taking Germany’s Stuttgart Open on Sunday. The 26-year-old, who was seeded sixth, overcame CoCo Vandeweghe 7-6 6-4 in just under two hours, adding another 11 aces to the 41 she had picked up earlier in the tournament.
The Czech football championship could be wrapped up within days after leaders Viktoria Plzeň beat 2:0 at the weekend, with two goals from Tomáš Hořava, and second-placed Slavia Prague could only manage a 0:0 draw at Slovan Liberec, who are sixth.
Those results leave Plzeň nine points clear with four rounds to go – and needing just one more when they face Slavia at the latter’s Eden Stadium on Saturday evening in what should be a very closely watched encounter.
At the other end of the league table the relegation spots are currently occupied by Brno and Baník Ostrava. The latter are one point from safety after a dramatic 3:2 home win over Sparta Prague in which Milan Baroš, now 36, scored the winner four minutes from time.
The Czech Republic’s Lukáš Krpálek has been crowned European judo champion for the third time in Israel’s Tel Aviv. He took gold on Saturday in the 100-plus kilogramme top weight category after previously winning at a lower weight. Krpálek is the most successful Czech judoka ever and took the country’s only gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Meanwhile, Prague has been selected as the venue for the 2020 European Judo Championships. It will be the second time the city has hosted the event.
Uwe Krupp has been named manager of Sparta Prague ice hockey club. The 52-year-old German, a two-time Stanley Cup winner during his playing career, has signed a two-year contract with the club. Sparta last won the domestic Extraliga title 11 years ago.
