Supreme Audit Office files criminal complaints over Liberec skiing championship

The Supreme Audit Office filed several criminal complaints in connection with the upcoming Nordic World Ski Championship, which will start in the north-Bohemian town of Liberec next week. The auditors believe the municipality of Liberec and the town’s Technical University broke several laws during preparations; they suspect that tens of millions of crowns were embezzled in the process. Organizers as well as the municipality have rejected the accusations.

The Nordic Ski World Championship had already been criticized for relying too much on public finances; the Czech government has spent around 1.5 billion crowns, or more than 67 million US dollars, on the event.
