Former Education Minister Josef Dobeš said that he has the names of at least eight other MPs who would be willing to support the governing coalition in case it looses the support of the LIDEM party, daily Pravo reports. Many of the people Mr Dobeš mentioned would be somewhat controversial. Among them are Dobeš’s fellow former Public Affairs party members Kristýna Kočí, Jaroslav Škárka, Milan Šťovíček, and some MPs who have distanced themselves from the Civic Democrats because of various scandals. The former minister believes that the coalition should not fall, and in exchange for his support wants more support for sports and improvements in government administration.
A fire at a textile factory in the town of Hořice in the region of Jičín is estimated to have cause 200-million crowns in damages. The massive fire started ealy on Saturday morning. Local firefighters were able to contain the fire, but were still trying to put it out completely in the afternoon. So far, the cause of the fire seems to have been a spark caused by a technical defect, but investigations are still underway. The Mileta factory is owned by an Indian company Alok and employs a large percentage of the local population.
The world-famous tenor Plácido Domingo will perform at a gala concert in Prague’s O2 arena on Saturday. The singer will perform alongside the national philharmonic from the Slovak city of Košice, and will be joined by the sopranos Ana Maria Martínez and Eva Urbanová.
Roman Smetana, a former bus driver from Olomouc who was sentenced for defacing election posters in 2010, was released from jail after finishing the remaining 77 days of his 100-day sentence. He was given the sentence after he refused to carry out court-ordered community service. Mr Smetana may receive another jail sentence for having previously refused to serve his sentence. Two cases filed against him is still to be heard by the Olomouc regional court.
Meteorologists have announced a smog alert in the Moravian-Silesian region, except Ostrava, Karvina and Frýdek-Místek. The worst situation is in Třinec, where the concentration of dust particles in the air is almost three times the permitted limits. The authorities are asking peopke with chronic breathing problems, heart disease, young children and the elderly to limit physical activity and to stay indoors.
The writer Květa Legátová died on Friday night at the age of 93. Although Ms Legátová has published her work since the 1950’s, she is best known for her collection of short stories Želary, which was published in 2001. This and a book called Jozova Hanule (2002) served as the basis for the film Želary, which came out in 2003.
A gorilla name Kijivu gave birth to her fifth child in Prague zoo on Saturday. The zoo’s oldest female gorilla Kamba is also expected to give birth by the end of the year.
