The number of overweight and obese Czech 15-year-olds has risen to around a quarter all boys and 13 percent of girls, according to a worldwide WHO survey in which Czech institutions took part. The figures chart a dramatic rise in obesity over the last 15 years. In 1998 just 9 percent of boys were obese. The Czech Republic, along with other Central European countries, has failed so far to get to grips with the problem while in most West European countries teenage obesity has been halted or is falling. One of the biggest causes according to Czech experts is that teenagers lack daily exercise although they sporadically still take part in sports events.
