The head of the top Czech ice hockey league has said that talks are going on about it expanding it to Slovak teams. League manager Josef Řezníček has said talks on the subject have been tabled for the general meeting of the association of Czech ice hockey league clubs with no final standpoint yet being taken. Talks are also progressing with the Slovak association, which would have to approve the move, he said. A positive decision could mean that the two top Slovak clubs, Slovan Bratislava and Košice could join the Czech league in the new season.

The Czech speed skating champion Martina Sáblíková has taken the gold medal in the women’s 3,000 metres at the World Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands. The Czech speed skater on Thursday beat defending champion Ireen Wüst of the Netherlands by more than a second and earned her third career title. Wüst’s compatriot Marije Joling finished third.

Czech speed skater Martina Sáblíková took the silver medal in the overall discipline at the European Speed Skating Championships in Chelyabinks on Sunday. The long-distance specialist, who was aiming for her fifth Euroepan allround title, won the 3,000 and 5,000 metres and finished second in the overall competition with 162.414 points. Sáblíková's longtime rival Ireen Wüst of the Netherlands took the gold for the fourth time in her career.
