A miniature Dead Sea – that’s what they call Kamencové jezero or Alum Lake in Chomutov. It is said to have healing powers. The alum prevents the growth of algae and the clean water contains sulphate, chloride and iron which are said to have a beneficial effect on respiratory diseases, infections, and even acne.
Prague saw the hottest summer since records began back in 1775, the Czech
Hydro-Meteorological Institute reported on its website on Thursday.
The oldest Czech meteorological station at Prague’s Klementinum recorded an average temperature of 22.7 degrees Celsisu, the highest in the past 244 years.
Until this year, the summer of 2003 was the hottest in history, with an average temperature of 22.4 degrees Celsius.
The Czech Republic has just seen its hottest day so far this year, with temperatures reaching highs of 37 degrees Celsius in places on Tuesday, and the current heatwave shows no signs of abating. As temperatures soar to mid-30s around the country, the scorching heat continues to affect the lives of individuals as well as business operations.
Wednesday marked the first tropical day of this year, according to the Czech Hydro-meteorological Institute. Temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius at 28 monitoring stations across the country. The highest temperature, over 32 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Brno. Meteorologists have also warned of a heightened risk of fires due to hot and dry weather. The first rainfall is expected to come at the end of the week.
Meteorologists have said that the rest of August and first week of September will see lower daily temperatures than the long-term average, falling, in the week of August 18 – 24 to around 22 degrees Celsius and the first weekend of September to around 20 degrees. Rain fall is also expected in the coming days. If the forecast holds, this weekend will be the last during summer vacation when highs top 30 degrees.
The hot weather which the Czech Republic has experienced since last week is set to continue. According to a monthly forecast issued by the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute on Saturday, temperatures in the period between July 29 and August 25 should be above average, while the coming week will almost certain see above thermometers recording relatively high values for the time of year. The forecasters say that rainfall levels will be average or below average in the next month.
