Karolína Plíšková has been knocked out in the quarter finals of
tennis’s US Open, the same stage at which she exited the tournament last
year. The Czech player was beaten by Serena Williams of the US 4-6 3-6.
Plíšková was the last remaining Czech singles player in the final Grand Slam of the season. This year there were no Czech men in singles action at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 1970.
Markéta Vondroušová has been knocked out in the fourth round at the US
Open in New York. The 19-year-old Czech took the first set against Lesja
Curenko of Ukraine but eventually lost 7-6 5-7 2-6.
That result means that the only Czech singles player remaining at Flushing Meadows is Karolína Plíšková, who will face America’s Serena Williams for a place in the semi-finals.
Karolína Plíšková has reached the fourth round at tennis’s US Open
for the third time in succession. The Czech player overcame Ashleigh Barty
of Australia 6-4 6-4 to set up a clash with local favourite Serena
Williams, who has 23 Grand Slams titles to her name.
The Czech women’s doubles pairing of Kateřina Siniaková and Barbora Krejčíková have also advanced to the fourth round in Flushing Meadows. After winning the French Open and Wimbledon the pair are the top seeds at the final Grand Slam tournament of the year.
The Czech women’s tennis number one, Petra Kvitová, has been knocked out
in the third round of the US Open in New York. The 28-year-old, who was
ranked fifth at Flushing Meadows, lost 5-7 1-6 to 20-year-old Aryna
Sabalenka of Belarus.
The result means that two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitová has failed to get to even the fourth round stage of any of this season’s four Grand Slam tournaments.
Slavia Prague have replaced Viktoria Plzeň at the top of the Czech soccer
league after a 4:0 victory over reigning champions in the capital. In a
dramatic game the hosts opened the scoring after just three minutes through
Souček and were awarded two penalties, converting one. The visitors had
defender Hubník sent off five minutes before half-time.
Previously Plzeň had taken the maximum points in the opening six round of the league and Slavia are only in front of them on goal difference.
The Czech Republic’s Karolína Plíšková has reached the fourth round

Sofia Kenin 6-4 7-6 to make it to that stage of the last Grand Slam
tournament of the year for the third time in a row.
However, Plíšková’s compatriots Barbora Strýcová and Karolína Muchová failed to make it out of round three at Flushing Meadows. Strýcová lost 3-6 6-7 to Elise Mertens of Belgium and Muchová, who was playing in her first Grand Slam tournament, was beaten 3-6 4-6 by Australia’s Ashleigh Barty.
Petra Kvitova advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open on Thursday,
defeating China’s Yafan Wang 7-5 6-3.
“It was a tough game. I lost it in the first set but was able to rally in time,” Kvitove told journalists.
The Czech, who is hoping for a third Grand Slam title, will next face 26 seed Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
No.8 seed Karolina Plíšková defeated Ana Bogdan and moved into the third
round at the US Open on Wednesday. Plíšková had to rally from 0-3 down
in the second set, but she turned the game around in emphatic fashion to
win 6-2, 6-3.
Next, Plíšková will take on the winner of the game between No.32 seed Maria Sakkari or Sonia Kenin in the third round.
The Czech Republic’s Karolína Plíšková has made it into the second
round at the US Open in New York. The eighth seed overcame Zarina Diyas of
Kazakhstan 6-4 7-6 despite making eight double faults and suffering four
breaks of serve.
Plíšková’s compatriots Lucie Šafářová, Barbora Strýcová and Grand Slam debutant Karolína Muchová also made it through the first round on Monday.
