One of the Czech Republic’s most famous football stars, Petr Čech will
now be minding the goal on skates. The former Chelsea and Arsenal
goalkeeper has agreed to play as a goalkeeper in the British ice hockey
team Guildford Phoenix until the end of the season. His ice hockey debut

The Czech sports star, who is also an accomplished drummer, told British media that after 20 years of playing football professionally, it will be a great experience to play some ice hockey, which he enjoyed following and playing as a child.
Slavia Prague were beaten 2:0 by Borussia Dortmund in football’s
Champions League in the Czech capital on Wednesday night. Both of the
Bundesliga side’s goals were scored by defender Achraf Hakimi, who found
the net on 35 minutes and again in the dying moments of the match.
Wednesday’s result leaves Slavia second from bottom of their group on one point, ahead of Inter Milan on goal difference. The Czech league champions – who drew at Inter in their opening game – will play host to Spanish giants Barcelona on October 23.
Czech cross-country mountain bike racer Kateřina Nash took the gold medal
in the second round of the Cyclo-cross World Cup in Waterloo, Wisconsin.
Its is the eighth career cyclocross World Cup victory for the Czech racer.
The 41-year-old racer finished 19 seconds ahead of Jolanda Neff of Switzerland. Evie Richards of Great Britain came third. Nash finished second in the World Cup opener in Iowa City, and currently leads the series.
Slavia Prague are preparing to play their first Champions League game in 12
years, away against Inter Milan, on Tuesday night. Slavia have a tough
group that also features Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund and their manager,
Jindřich Trpišovský, says the club’s aim will be to still be in
European competition after Christmas.
To achieve that the Czech title-holders would need to come at least third in the group, a result that would give them a place in the knock-out stages of the second-tier Europa League.
This is only the second time Slavia have reached the Champions League.
Tennis player Karolína Plíšková won the Zhengzhou Open in China on Sunday beating Croatia’s Petra Martic 6: 3 and 6: 2, in a rain-interrupted final. The Czech player, top seed at the event, only dropped one set all week on her way to the title. The victory in the Zhengzhou Open is her fourth title this year and fifteenth overall in her career.
Karolína Plíšková has been knocked out in the fourth round of the US
Open in New York. The Czech third seed, who was wearing a bandage on her
left thigh, lost 7-6 3-6 5-7 to the UK’s Johanna Konta in a dramatic
match lasting almost two and a half hours.
Plíšková’s exit at Flushing Meadows means she will not become world number after the final Grand Slam tournament of the season. She would have been the top-ranked player if she had reached the semi-finals.
Karolína Plíšková has reached the fourth round of the US Open in New
York. The Czech third seed overcame the Tunisian player Ons Jabeur 6-1 4-6
6-4 on Friday. It is the fourth year in a row that Plíšková has made it
into the second week of the final Grand Slam tournament of the season.
Her compatriot Karolína Muchová was knocked out 3-6 2-6 in the third round by US star Serena Williams, a six-time winner at Flushing Meadows.
Slavia Prague have put themselves in a good position to reach the Champions League group stage after beating Romanian side Cluj 1:0 away in the first leg of their final qualifying round tie. The Czech side’s goal came from Lukáš Masopust in the first half, while in the second goalkeeper Ondřej Kolář saved a penalty and the hosts hit the woodwork. The second leg takes place in Prague next Wednesday.
