One-quarter of the players in Czech football’s top division are
foreigners, iRozhlas.cz reported on Tuesday. Of the 354 players who made
appearances in the autumn part of the season, 90 were not from the Czech
Republic, the news site said.
While Slovaks, as is traditional, account for a large number of them, footballers from Eastern European and African states are also making their mark. Foreigners have been the top scorers at half of the top flight’s 16 clubs so far this season.
Viktoria Plzeň can look forward to European football in the New Year after securing third spot in their Champions League group to earn a place in the Europa League. It is the fifth time coach Pavel Vrba has steered Plzeň to the spring phase of Europe’s second-tier competition – an impressive feat for a club of the West Bohemians’ stature.
Viktoria Plzeň have boosted their chances of coming third in their group
in football’s Champions League after a 2:1 away win over CSKA Moscow on
Tuesday evening. The Czech side went behind in Moscow before overturning
the deficit with goals from Roman Procházka, who had earlier missed a
penalty, and Lukáš Hejda.
With the two qualifying positions in the group won by Real Madrid and Roma, Plzeň are vying with CSKA for third spot and a place in the Europa League after Christmas. With both on equal points, Plzeň welcome Roma on the final match day in a fortnight while CSKA visit Real.
Slavia Prague have returned to the top of the Czech soccer league. They
overcame city rivals Dukla 4:1 on Monday evening to again move two points
in front of reigning champions Viktoria Plzeň and bring the 13th round of
the season to an end.
Two of Slavia’s goals came from midfielder Miroslav Stoch. The result leaves Slavia seven points ahead of rivals Sparta Prague ahead of a derby clash between the two next weekend.
