Miloš Říha is likely to be named as the new head coach of the Czech
national ice hockey team, the daily Sport reported on Wednesday. The Czech
Ice Hockey Association will appoint him at a meeting in June, but according
to the daily, they have already agreed on future cooperation.
Mr Říha will replace former coach Josef Jandač, who stepped down after the world championships and he is heading to KHL’s Magnitogorsk.
The Czech Republic beat Belarus 3:0 at the Ice Hockey World Championships
in Denmark on Friday evening. It was the Czechs’ fourth victory in the
tournament but the first in which they took maximum points. All three
goals, from Libor Šulák, Roman Horák and Michal Řepík, came in the

The Czech hockey team lost its bid for the bronze at the Winter Olympics on
Saturday, suffering a 6:4 defeat at the hands of Canada.
Canada gained a 3:1 lead in the first period and although the Czechs attempted to rally towards the end of the game, shooting three goals in relatively quick succession, they failed to turn the game around. The Czechs have thus taken fourth place.
The Czech Republic’s hopes of playing for the gold in the 2018 Winter
Olympics were dashed by the team’s 0:3 loss to Russia in the first of the
men’s semi-final games on Friday.
Nikita Gusev and Vladislav Gavrikov netted goals in quick succession in the second period, while Ilya Kovalchuk slotted into an empty net late in the game.
The Czechs will now face either Canada or Germany for the bronze.
In ice hockey, the prospects of Czech back Michal Jordán playing in the
Olympic semi-finals against Russia on Friday have improved.
Jordán, 27, was left out of the team that narrowly beat the US on Wednesday because of muscle pains.
On Thursday he underwent a full training session and said he was ready to play. The Czechs are widely seen as underdogs against Russia to get into the Olympic finals.
