The Czech minister of agriculture, Moiroslav Toman, is set to meet with
European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan in
Brussels on Monday. One of the topics on their agenda will bet EU’s plan
to cut direct subsidies to farmers.
Under the planned EU’s budget for 2021-2027, farmers would receive around 232 billion euros in direct support, which represents a drop of more than 30 billion euros from the current seven-year budget.
According to the Czech Agrarian Chamber, Czech farmers would receive around 4.1 percent less than in the previous seven-year period.
Receding waterlines stemming from long droughts this summer have revealed some disturbing ancient relics – so-called “hunger stones”, some dating back as far as 1616, which serve as a warning to future generations. One such hydrological landmark on the Labe River is inscribed in German with the words in "If you see me, weep."
The Social Democrat minister of agriculture, Miroslav Toman, is creating a
commission to oversee an audit relating to the restitution of church
property, the newspaper Právo reported on Saturday. Mr. Toman told the
daily that the commission – due to start work at the end of this month
– would focus on the forestry agency Lesy ČR and other bodies under his
ministry that had in the past handed anything over to churches under
divisive legislation passed five years ago.
The recently installed government of ANO and the Social Democrats say that financial settlements made to churches in lieu of property seized by the Communists after 1948 should be taxed. That was a demand of the present-day Communist Party for supporting the minority coalition on key votes. Critics say the move is akin to imposing a charge on a robbery victim.
The newly-appointed agriculture minister, Miroslav Toman, has said he will move to regulate the number of promotional campaigns in supermarket chains. The announcement comes in the wake of a controversial promo campaign at the German retailer Kaufland which recently offered shoppers a liter of milk for the price of just 1 crown.
The Czech Republic’s largely coniferous forests are facing the worst calamity in years. Experts are warning that if required measures are not taken soon enough, the forests might soon find themselves wiped out. Despite the alarming situation, the agriculture ministry is looking to keep the current monoculture forestry format more or less unchanged.
India with its population of around 1.4 billion and growth rate for 2016 of just over 7.0 percent is clearly an appetising market for anyone. But it’s sheer size, reputation for bureaucratic obstacles, and the time and expense of opening markets also makes it a daunting challenge for most exporters.
Jiří Milek, head of an agricultural and food production company Úsovsko,
is a candidate to be agriculture minister in the minority cabinet prepared
by ANO leader Andrej Babiš, the daily Právo reported on Thursday.
The news was confirmed by Mr Babiš, who said Milek was ready to leave his business if he became minister. Milek, who was an unsuccessful candidate to be an ANO party deputy in 2013, was recommended for the post by the Agrarian Chamber.
The popular pig-slaughtering feasts which usually take place in February are going to start early for some pig-breeders this year. Farmers living in the area infested with swine-fever have been ordered to cull their animals in view of a growing risk of the disease spreading from wild boar to pigs in the region.
