For fans of the Prague soccer club Bohemians 1905, the year 2010 is shaping up to be the end of an era. Due to several architectural shortcomings that would cost millions of crowns to fix, the club will have to leave its storied Ďolíček stadium in Vršovice. But some Bohemians fans believe that the real reason behind the club’s move is a different one. Sarah Borufka reports.
Top Czech tennis player Tomáš Berdych has crashed out of the Monte Carlo open. Berdych was beaten by Spaniard Fernando Verdasco for a place in the quarter finals of the ATP tournament. He won the first set 7:5 but lost the next two sets 3:6 and 2:6. He had won six out of the previous nine encounters with Verdasco. Berdych is currently ranked the top Czech men’s singles player with a 15th place on the ATP world rankings.
Tomáš Berdych has reached the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters after beating Richard Gasquet of France 6-2 6-0 in just 57 minutes on Tuesday. Berdych next faces Fernando Verdasco, making it three clashes between the two players in three tournaments. The Czech, who is 24, has won six out of a total of nine matches against the Spaniard. Berdych recently became Czech men’s number one after reaching the final of the Miami Masters.
In a major fixture of the Czech football season, Sparta Prague beat city rivals Slavia 1:0 on Monday. The host Sparta, a strong favourite for this year’s title, was on the defensive throughout much of the first half, with defending champions Slavia wasting some good opportunities. But in the 39th minute, Sparta threw the ball in front of the goal where it re-bounced before Sparta’s Libor Sionko drove it in. In the second half, Slavia was pushing to equalize but Sparta would not let that happen. After Monday’s win, Sparta Prague is leading the table with two points ahead of Baník Ostrava, six rounds before the end of the season. Slavia, down at eight place, has lost any viable chance of defending the league title.
Czech tennis number one Tomáš Berdych won his first clay match of the new season when he beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez 6:3, 6:1 in the first round at Monte Carlo Masters tournament on Monday. After a slow beginning, which saw him losing 0:2 in the first set, Berdych managed to turn the game around winning five games in a row. He then made very few faults and served seven aces to clinch a victory. In the second round, Tomáš Berdych will face Richard Gasquet from France.

After reaching the final of the Miami Masters on Sunday, Tomáš Berdych has now become the Czech men’s tennis number one. Berdych, who was beaten for the title by Andy Roddick of the United States, is now ranked 16th in the world. The 24-year-old’s best ranking to date has been ninth. Berdych’s strong run at Miama lifted him above compatriot Radek Štěpánek, who is now 19th in the world. Štěpánek is currently taking a break from tennis after being hit by fatigue syndrome

Czech Tomáš Berdych was defeated by American Andy Roddick in the final of the Miami Masters on Sunday. One break of serve in each set was enough for Roddick, who didn't face a break point in the entire match which he won 7-5, 6-4. His victory brought an end to the impressive run of the 16th-seeded Berdych, who had survived a match point to shock world number one Roger Federer in the fourth round. Berdych said he was disappointed not to have won, but overall he was satisfied with his tournament in which he’d played a couple of really good matches.
