Lukáš Krpálek has won the annual Czech Sportsman of the Year
competition. The Judo world champion beat second placed basketball player
Tomáš Satoránský by 74 points. The Boston Bruins's ice hockey
right winger David Pastrňák placed third. The winners in the collective
category were the Czech national basketball team, who placed sixth in this
year's FIBA Basketball World Cup.
Aside from ice hockey star Jaromír Jágr, Mr Krpálek is one of only two men to win the award in the past 14 years.
The Czech football team Slavia Prague lost 1:3 to Inter Milan at the Sinobo
Stadium in Prague on Wednesday evening. With third placed Dortmund now five
points ahead of the Czech team, the loss means that Slavia is doomed to
finish last in the group and not qualify for the spring Europa League.
The game saw Inter take the lead in the 19. minute, but Slavia's Tomáš Souček equalised from a penalty before half time. A deflected shot by Lukáš Masopust in the second half could have seen Slavia go into the lead, but goalkeeper Samir Handanović managed to push the shot out for a corner. Goals by Inter's Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martínez then sealed the result for the away side in the last 10 minutes.

The visiting fans attacked local supporters, firefighters and police officers. At least one victim has been hospitalised.
Of those arrested 19 could be charged for disturbing the peace while seven may face charges for instigating a riot.
Sparta Prague manager Václav Jílek has accused his players of making
trivial and naive mistakes in defence after a 3:4 defeat at Mladá Boleslav
in Czech football’s First League on Sunday. Sparta have seven points out
of a possible 15 after the first five rounds of the season.
Defending champions Slavia Prague are first on 13 points after a 1:0 win over Jablonec at the weekend. Viktoria Plzen were beaten 2:0 at home by Slovácko; last season’s runners-up have now failed to score in four games.
A fan of the football club Victoria Plzeň has died following a skirmish in
a pub in Kutná Hora. The man died of his injuries on Friday at a hospital
Police say they have identified a suspect in the death of the 36-year-old Plzeň supporter and have filed a motion for his arrest.
The suspect is allegedly a regular at the Kutná Hora pub, where the deceased had been watching his team play a televised away game against a Belgian club.
It is unclear whether football featured in the clash between the two men.
The Czech football goalkeeper Petr Čech lost the final game of his career
on Wednesday night when his club Arsenal were beaten 4:1 in the final of
the Europa League by his former team Chelsea. The 37-year-old made a couple
of important saves when Arsenal were still in with a chance and was seen by
many as their best performer.
Čech holds the record for number of international caps with the Czech Republic and collected numerous trophies and set goalkeeping records during a very successful period at Chelsea.
