Marathon cross-country skier Stanislav Řezáč won the bronze medal at the traditional 90km Vasaloppet race in Sweden on Sunday. The 41-year-old Řezáč managed to keep with the lead group of skiers, but lost his strength in the final two kilometres. Norway's Petter Eliassen took the win, finishing ahead of his compatriot Anders Aukland. It was the 17th start at the Vasaloppet for Řezáč, who won a total of six medals over the years. Another Czech, Adéla Boudíková, finished eleventh, securing the best result for Czech women skiers in the history of the race.
Czech cross country skier Lukáš Bauer took the silver medal at the Nordic skiing world championships in Falun, Sweden on Sunday. First place went to Norway’s Petter Northug. Thirty-seven-year-old Bauer for whom this may be the last big race in his career said he was overjoyed by the victory. The only other Czech in the running Martin Jakš placed sixteenth.
Norway's Morten Eide Pedersen has won the Czech Republic's biggest cross-country skiing event, the Jizerská padesátka, finishing ahead of his compatriot Petter Eliassen. The Czech Republic's Stanislav Řezáč finished in seventh place. The women's race was won by Czech-born Kateřina Smutná, representing Austria. The 50-kilometre course had to be changed and shortened to 45 due to insufficient natural snow.
The 47th cross country skiing event Jizerská 50 has been cancelled due to insufficient natural snow, the organizers announced on Monday. In a statement issued on the Jizerská 50 homepage they said persistent above-freezing temperatures and rain over the weekend have made it impossible to prepare the race route, many kilometres of which are completely without snow cover. The decision to cancel the race was made on Monday in view of a forecast predicting even higher temperatures in the coming days.
With warmer spring temperatures, this weekend is expected to be the last of the season for ski hills still open. Many have already shut down for the spring and summer but several across the country still boast good conditions, including sites in the Krkonoše Mountains such as Harrachov, Špindlerův Mlýn and Medvědín. Even areas no longer running lifts, for example in the Jeseníky Mountains, still have 94 centimetres of snow – ideal for cross-country skiing, meteorologists have noted.
